Flatty.Fan686
Headed down to Narrabeen yesterday evening for a fish in the lake . Started fishing about 7pm . Live beach worm straight on the hook , first cast . Bang ! Onto a whiting just under legal 25cm Seemed to be the story of the whole night . Fished till about 12 pm & ended up with 10 whiting between the 2 of us . 6 on my behalf & 4 on my mates . All around the 23 - 25 cm mark Good fun on real light gear ! No keeper fish but still a great night Just out of curiosity can anyone help me out as to why we couldnt get into any of the bigger ones ? Or couldnt get into any flathead . My last 2 whiting that I caught were on whole prawns . Cheers

Jewhunter
Whiting tend to school up mate. Quite often they are all of a similar size. Sometimes some of the larger fish can be just away from the main school of fish so try casting wider & in different directions to where you are catching the smaller fish. Sometimes it works & sometimes the bigger fish just aren't there! Well done on getting into some fish anyway. Cheers, Grant.
Kirst1583
I was at narrabeen also.. Got nothing other than tiny bream Just curious tho - do whiting feel different to other fish when they bite? It kept feeling like there was a vibration on the line or like strumming a guitar and I'm wondering if that's what it was

It kept feeling like there was a vibration on the line or like strumming a guitar and I'm wondering if that's what it was from my experience whiting have light bites and constantly biting till you strike unless they swallow the whole bait straight away. ginko
is Narrabeen lake open to the sea again (it was dammed up for repairs to a parking lot (go figure?)) In calm waters, if you're getting just little ones, you may be in too shallow water. The juveniles hang out over nipper beds, and the bigger ones tend to hang out adjacent to weed patches in deeper water. I guess the bigger ones realise that their shadows are a good indicator for sea eagles to target them, so they stay out of really shallow water. Kirst1583
Ok .. So I guess that's what it coulda been. It just felt strange compared to normal bites. Maybe they were just really small. Otherwise it coulda been that I was using prawns rather than worms.. Hmm

Hmm also sometimes the tide might be moving fast and ur line is probably going through the weed beds in the water
