Penrith Weir - What Can I Catch

GABBA

Recommended Posts

Hi, me and a mate went over to Penrith Weir to have a bit of a fish. While we were there we caught one fish (he broke off before I could identify him) and a turtle (poor guy). I am a fan of the place, but need a bit more information. I threw some bread in the water when I got there and within seconds it was taken by some fish (what could they be?).

I am actually chasing some Carp, simply because I would like to catch/fight a big fish (and am not really keen on the taste of fish). Can anyone tell me what I can catch over at the weir, and more specifically where i can catch the Carp.

I was attempting to use corn kernals and bread, but the bred was a nightmare on the hook, VERY hard to get it on. Any advice?

I was using a small sinker at the time, but also tried without, but found i wasnt able to get out far enough.

Any advice on the above is appreciated.

with the bread i usually take the white parts of the slice quick dip in water and keep squeezing it with my hands for around 20mins which makes it like dough wat easier to put on the hook

Spooooled

Wet every 2nd piece of bread and mix the wet piece with a dry piece until the consistency is quite firm. It's then easy to mould round your hook. Carp spend a lot of time feeding on the bottom so put a heavier sinker on to allow you to cast where you want and know that your bread is on the bottom. I usually position my sinker close to my hook. If you fish say 15 mtres in then you can break off small balls of the bread and throw them in around your hook. In still water this will attract the fish to your bait. In running water a small berley cage is good when used instead of the sinker and filled with the same bait you're using (bread, corn, etc.) Hope this helps, Carp are good fun and fight better than most of out native fish do. Cheers, Neil.
