Actually may not be a Pilot Whale due to the head not being melon type. Second Swordies thought, through the look of the head and the dorsal it is indeed a False Killer Whale. Is Definately Not a Killer Whale and far from being a Mako.

Yes bombora they do venture this way but extremely rare. I too believe they will make an appearence one day. I spend at least 300days/yr on the water and have never seen one. For starters its not the season for kilers, they are far far from here and to far up the coast for them. Havnt been seen in Sydney waters for over 40 yrs, furthest a killer or two has surfaced was off wollongong a few years back. Last time i heard of killer whales was whem my great uncles used to fish with them in Eden.

Not saying anything about what is in the picture, but i've fished for 23 years off Sydney.August 2010 I was running out to the southern canyons from Port Hacking I saw a pod of orcas for the first time.Off the side of the boat in a southerly ground swell I saw a pod of 4 or 5 cruizing down a wave,They looked like black and white busses with big dorsal fins.Impressive to see but in a 23 foot centre console I'm in no hurry to see it again.
