Formosan
Hi Guys. The moons must have been aligned for our leave passes to be granted on the same day. Thanks to our .So Quintrex480 and I and some deckies were able to hit the bay today. Got to the yakka spot within 15 mins we got enuff yakkas. Then off to the squid grounds, Quintrex was on fire first then we joined in and got enuff to go chase kings. Plan was to DR , Until today I haven't use my Cannon DR I bought 2 months ago, I haven't really need to used it as you don't need them to chase breams. In my books When we have squid I was optimistic, So we made our way to the kingy spot, both boats doing laps up and down. All of a sudden my 24kg Saltist outfit went off with 70lb braid and 100Lb leader. It was the heaviest and longest fight I ever had suffice to say I was glad I fish heavy, taking note of what Jim77 says when he caught his biggie. Anyways we motor the boat away from the reef and fought it and gaffed it. 110 cms Hoodie very happy about it. We continue to do laps and got hits almost on every pass, a couple of missed hookups or just snatching the squid head and missing the hook. Meanwhile the occupants of Quintrex480's boat were seen to be pumping and winding and scampering to deeper waters on numerous occaisions. Next was my brother in law's turn to grab the rod when it goes off, a few misses and false starts before he hooked up on a 89cm speciment. As the day went by we ran out of small squids so we strip big one and DR it, Had another chance of what we believe to be another metre king only for it to reef us. Didn't motor away quick enuff or drag was too loose. Then follow by another take and bust off . Also landed a Rat on my medium tackle rod while trolling squid guts it went back off course. We also got a decent salmon then called it a day and got stuck in the storm and hail. Edited February 11, 2012 by Formosan

jim77
Nice work fellas. Next time don't strip up the big squid... Get the biggest squid you can catch and put it down whole, and then hang on!

Where did u put all the yakkas once all the squid came on board? re length Normally it is how you use it that matters put yakkas with squids tried yakka for 1 pass no takers. Judging by the power of the bust offs there are bigger models down there.
Formosan
Thanks for the reply guys. Nice work fellas. Next time don't strip up the big squid... Get the biggest squid you can catch and put it down whole, and then hang on! Jim, I use a two hook rig but not a sliding snell the length between the hook is fixed. Ideally we want the stinger to come closer to the head. The Bigger ones..our stinger goes to the hood somewhere and we found that they smash the heads just missing the stinger and we end up trolling a headless squid. Headless squid are not affective at all , It is when we strip it and made frilly legs. It worked. We can just re tie the rig but will risk making unwanted burley. You are right..big bait = big fish.
