ALI-G
Went out for a spin in the tinny around 6.30 this morning. Noticed there were plenty of fish busting up on the surface, got hit a few times but failed to set the hooks? I have no idea what the fish are feeding on but they wouldn't even touch little 3in transparent salt n pepper slug-go's, I think they may be bonito but usually bonnies will eat just about anything you throw at em as long as it's not too big? tried to hook one all day but to no avail! tried for some squid at shark island and Lady jane but no takers, was hoping to test the new Daiwa nude jigs I brought from Platco in Japan....... they obviously dont work It was then a short troll over to Balmoral to try for some yakkas, on the way we came across some spoil from a trawler and there were gulls and fish everywhere! Again we just couldn't get the fish to take our lures?? anyway Balmoral produced a few Yakkas but it was tough as there were several thousand sweep to get through at the surface. a couple of swimmers mentioned that there were some kings swimming about of a good size and we spotted one cruising around but there was no interest in our offerings. Getting desperate now we moved over to the Northern end of Balmoral and anchored up near structure, dropped the livies down and decided to have a flick with a 4in powerbait minnow for flatties. First cast and bang!! I set the hook in to something decent, unfortunately I took a knife to a gun fight and soon my 17lb leader snapped clean under the wharf as my 2500 Sol's drag didn't cope, Things were not going well!! Time for the big guns, I decided to try my new Terez 15-30lb rod with one of the new waxwing lures from Shimano in silver, I was amazed by the action of the lure by just winding the reel, the eratic action looked great. Sure enough second cast and a decent king followed it out but bottled it at the last second this was getting ridiculous! Finally a couple more casts towards the structure and wallop!! After a shortish tussle I landed My first King of the season, Thank F$%@! he was only around 60cm but was very thick and in great condition. All in all it has been a bit or a weird year so far in the harbour but I think the kings are finally arriving in numbers, I may have only caught a rat but i saw plenty of activity and cant wait to get back out there. Did anyone else get anything decent, there were loads of boats out there? Tight Lines Ali-G
