fisholb
hi raiders. its been a while since my last post. anyway, i decided to take one of my mate to avoca to catch his 1st bonito. weve been to avoca a couple of times before but we only caught salmon. th last time we went the waves were huge. we only stayed for less than an hour and decided to packed up when a very huge wave almost took most of our gear away. i told my mates 'we better go' conditions are very bad. that was about a month ago. i had sat and sun off so i told my mate well go if the weather is ok for sunday (19/2/12). i checked the weather sat night and the weather is looking ok. no wind and a chance of storm from midday. swell is less than 2m. i rang up my mate and told him ill pick him up around 430am sunday. we got to the spot just before 6am. the spot is already packed. i spoke to some fishos and they told me they were there since sat night. only caught monster yakkas. not even a single tailor. i told my mate 'not looking good'. while we were rigging up, the fishos on our left and right were starting to bring in the bonito. i told my mate, 'this is it mate' this is the time'. on my 1st cast, i caught my 1st bonito for 2012 within 5mins. i caught it on whole pilchard on the '2 hook rig'on a float. my mate was not having much luck on he bonito. he keep losing the bonito on the way up. he keep changing his rig. after one hour or so i told my mate to use smaller hooks. after changing his rig, he caught 3 bonito in about 30mins. we got plenty of mis-hookups and a couple of bust offs. my mate was 'over the moon'. he said to me 'mate this is the best fishing day ever'. my mate is used to catching bream trev yakka all the time. hes very good at it too. we ended up taking home 6 bonito for me and 5 for my mate. average size of the bonito was around the 50cm mark. a couple were around the 65cm mark. craigbutcher
Nice work on the Boniton mate. Very good quality Sashimi if bled and iced right away. Another tip mate, spend time collecting Bonito for bait. I have caught solid Jewfish, Kings, Snapper on Bonito. They are one of the most effective baits as they are oily & quit bloody. They are good bait for your type of fishing i.e. from the rocks in close. Over the cooler months dont be suprised if you crack a snapper over 40cm in close on an unweighted Bonito fillet. Take care!
