Benzeenees
Two weeks ago, John and I caught several nice kingies off Moruya Heads using live yellowtail. We were back again this week, so were the fish but we couldn't get them to bite on live yellowtail, jigs or anything else until today when we managed to catch 2 large squid, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. John got to use both and this resulted in 2 hookups and one fish in the boat - a nice 85cm model. Have other people experienced this problem - lots of fish but no bite or only biting on squid? Are they likely to eat yellowtail at a certain stage of the tide? Any suggestions on how to get them to bite? Tomorrow we will try to catch more squid but we have limited space in our live bait tank and the squid are quite big - 500-750g at a guess. And I believe it's not easy to keep squid alive. Dfishin
Thats Kingies for ya. Its not uncommon to be able to Bag out on kingies somewhere and then fish it the next weekend or next day for that matter with no results even though you can pick them up on the sounder. I do alot of jigging and livebaiting for kingies and have experienced this. Do you know if any commercial fishing boats have been through them ? Not saying they have been fished out but i have seen unbelievable kingy fishing on the south coast and the commercial fishing boats come in and take tonnes ( literally ) and the kingies do slow down alot and start to move around. Not blaming the commercial fishing maybe its a coincident. After all they do move around alot and feed better at different times. sometimes they will smash jigs and other times only livies. have not had heaps of experience with squid. I suggest try the pearl white 5" soft plastic even in deep water use a 1oz- 2oz jig head depending on depth. or keep getting squid. Also what was the current doing. The old saying says if theres no run theres no fun. Dave
dabble
Its quite common for the kings to only bite on squid. the good news for you is that its very uncommon for them to only bite on live squid. Basically if they are zoned in on squid you will get them on head baits, gut baits and strip baits usually so those big squid could easily be used as 4-6 really good baits and dont have to be kept live, just nice and fresh. Just fish them like a livie, you can even downrig with strips and head baits with good success. good luck and congrats on the 85 - nice fish
