Hi Raiders,

Just wondering if anyone might know why my mates 225HP mercury EFI motor cuts out after running at 4000 revs for about 2 mins.

it starts fine everytime, and the primer has allways got constant pressure.

Any ideas?

Hi, my guess would be fuel or spark so easy to check the fuel system if you know what you are doing. If it is a sundeen stop, like turning the key off it would be ignition but that can hard for home handyman to find out but check all the earths would be a good starting point. I do hope you have 3/8 fuel line and no wing nuts on the battery and do a fuel flow test with the correct equipment to rule that out.

Cheers,

Huey.

Hi, many reasons but wing nuts vibrate loose and then you have problems ranging from regulators/rectifiers blowing not working, gauge problems and with EFI engines you can damage electrical components like ECUs etc. Also many a fire has been contributed to wing nuts. Long story short do not use them, fit battery terminals with nylock nuts no matter what brand or technology outboard the boat may have and this has been like this for 30 plus years so anyone worth his salt that works on outboards should know this and is one of the first things we check when a boat from elsewhere comes in here and I can guarentee there are many dealers that do not have a clue and I can almost be certain iof a boat has come from a certain place I could tell you if it had wing nuts without even looking.

Cheers,

Huey.

Thanks for the reply,Some good points about the wing nuts.

The motor doesn't turn of like u turn a key off. It's more like a fast choking stop .

It will be fuel than most likely so at least make sure you have 3/8 fuel line and is E10 compatible-even if you do not use it.

Cheers,

Huey.
