zaki10 Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Hey guys just bought my new penn 9500 reel! Really excited to use the thing as my other one stuffed up on me just asking I'm going around the cliffs at watsons bay and wanted to know what line to use on this reel? I was thinking 60 pound mono with 90pound leader any other suggestions?
the one that got away Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Hey guys just bought my new penn 9500 reel! zaki10 Posted April 19, 2012 Author Posted April 19, 2012 King fish as my friend usually does and we cast on a 15-20 metre drop so I need something strong considering the fact that I'm pulling up atleast 7- 13kgs.
zaki10 Posted April 19, 2012 Author Posted April 19, 2012 Make sure the rods strong enough... I think it's a solid rod the Asian guys that go fishing there use the same one and they pull up big fish with it and no hassles at all! But yer I have seen it in action so should be good thanks for commenting.
zaki10 Posted April 20, 2012 Author Posted April 20, 2012 Use wire trace just incase... Definitely consider that thanks mate!
caranx Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 (edited) Why would you use wire trace for kingfish? Use a decent flurocarbon leader or penn 10x . Edited April 20, 2012 by caranx
caranx Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 And those reels arent super strong. Shaft bent on my one and not worth repairing.
zaki10 Posted April 20, 2012 Author Posted April 20, 2012 Why would you use wire trace for kingfish? Use a decent flurocarbon leader or penn 10x . I was thinking you only use that for fish with teeth that have the ability to bite through your line. Kingfish just suck it all up and off they go!
zaki10 Posted April 20, 2012 Author Posted April 20, 2012 It will cost you more to repair than buying a new one, how come it bent?
caranx Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 (edited) No need for wire on kings at all. I dont use wire on tailor or bonito either and they have decent teeth (for sydney fish anyway). Dont know why it bent, locked up when fishing for kings after a hookup. Not sure if faulty or servicing issue. If casting braid , the deep spool is not good either, but will work fine with mono. I swapped mine for a spheros and it hasnt missed a beat. Mine was a 850ssm, I much prefer the old model. Spare spools for the penn are $90-110, and considering you can buy a new reel for $100 now or so for the 850ssm. Edited April 20, 2012 by caranx
zaki10 Posted April 20, 2012 Author Posted April 20, 2012 Nice! Well I service once a year just grease up the inside of the reel I'll be sure to do the same for this one. It should be ok if it stuffs up after two years not a problem just get a new one haha but yer Sydney fish you don't need to use wire at all.
Jew Stalker Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 I have the 850ssm on my jigging rod, I caught my biggest king so far (89cm) on it and it had no issues at all. It has also caught me a bluefin which spat the hook at the boat on me but it was at least 20kg. I use a 50lb braid on mine and for kings anything from 50-150lb FC leader (they definitely are not leader shy).
zaki10 Posted April 20, 2012 Author Posted April 20, 2012 Thanks Jew stalker appreciate the help from you mate and I'll be sure to apply 50lb line to my reel hopefully I have good luck using my new rod and reel I love the first time feeling haha.
