Pommieben Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Hi All, Myself and a mate have hired a boat for a day next week and are heading out for our first non land based fishing in the harbour. Obviously we'd like to get amongst the kingies and know that fresh bait is the order of the day. First question is, where do we head to pick up some yakkas and what methods do people use for getting them? Are there spots that you can reliably fins yakka shoals? Second question, what rig to use for the kingies? I've read that people use floats, but am unsure what depth you find the kingies at. Is freelining an option or is it best to get the bait down with some lead? Any advice appreciated.
Siesta911 Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Hi there. Good luck on your first boat fishing! For yakkas, we usually catch them at Roseville, Balmoral or Little Manly. If you get there early in the morning and use berley, you shouldn't have any problem. As for rig, we usually don't use any float while targeting kings from boat. We use paternoster rig. We adjust depth per fishfinder readings. Hope these help.
rjc123 Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Fish baits at different depths like one 1 meter off the bottom and one 2.5m off the bottom. Unweighted yakkas in kingy hotspots work allright too. You could also try slow trolling them. Just hook the yakka through the lips and he should swim straight. You can also get yakkas at Sow n Pigs at times. Good luck!

I've been reading about various berley mixes and chicken pellets and tuna oil feature quite a lot. Where can you get these around Manly? Should we just hit the head for the kinigies after we get some bait?
cameldownunder Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 For yackas my favorite burley is Oil+Bread+Sand. Have fun Mixing.
