Jew Stalker Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 (edited) So my 8 year old daughter comes home the other day and asks me if she can have a hook. A little bit bewildered as to why she would want one of my hooks I ask her (thinking she was going to stick it on her brothers chair) and her reply to me was "so I can go fishing of course". Still a bit puzzled I asked her who she was going fishing with and like it was common knowledge she boldly states "with school". With that I am positively floored, never did I imagine that a school would do fishing as an activity . I was feeling quite ripped off as a kid now hehehe. So the pieces come together. She wanted a hook to stick on my bait rod so she could take it to school and catch some fish hehehe. This bait rod is just one of those $20 specials with barely a metal reel and all it is good for is skull dragging a yakka to me so I can toss it on a bigger hook, there is no way it could handle anything more than that so I had an idea. Down to my local tackle store I went with a pretty vivid picture of what was needed. A rod which was not too fragile and nothing special as long as it doesn't break when loaded up with the weight of a fish she is likely to catch (silver trevors, tailor, bream, flathead, maybe the odd passing salmon also) on the little jetty across from the school on the lake and a cheap yet decent reel with a consistent drag which will catch her a fish. I ended up settling for a tough little Shakespeare 6 footer rod and a Shimano Sienna 1000 reel loaded up with 8lb mono. All up it cost me $70 bucks so it wasn't too bad on the pocket either (compared to my $700+ units) I also added a bunch of hooks and sinkers about bream size so she would have some spares. All in all she has a little outfit now which is basic, tough for a clumsy 8 year old, has a reel which will catch her a fish and a bit of tackle. I wish I had this outfit when I was 8... I daresay my little girl is going to want to come with me now too hehehe. Should be fun. Edited April 26, 2012 by Jew Stalker
J Hooked Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 That's fantastic. I'm jealous after reading that. I wish we had fishing at school. But then the water wasn't across the road. We did have a storm water canal though...???
Hodgey Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 A few of the local schools have 'fishing' as a sport here. It used to be conducted in the Moruya River next to where I worked. At lunch time I would go down there, catch up with the teachers, and give talks on casting, knot tying, lures and so on. Kids would sit there rapt and the teachers were very appreciative. It was the favourite day of the week for them ... and me as well! Cheers Hodgey
Jew Stalker Posted April 26, 2012 Author Posted April 26, 2012 Good on ya, I remember when my dad got me into fishing, now he won't buy me a packet of lures! being 15 is annoying, it's when the pocket money stops and you can't be bothered to get a job! We need to bring more kids into fishing! Only know 3 kids that live near me that are seriously into fishing like I am, 3 among over 10 000 kids on the North Shore! I agree, I see quite a few kids dangling a line around here but Merimbula is very much a tourist destination so it is hard to pick the local kids from the tourists around christmas and easter the rest of the year is a bit chilly so the kids aren't out so much. That's fantastic. I'm jealous after reading that. I wish we had fishing at school. But then the water wasn't across the road. We did have a storm water canal though...??? I am totally jealous, I had the Nepean river a K or so from my school at Emu Plains but we never went down there to take advantage of it. We did a science project or two and a study of the river but never to fish. A few of the local schools have 'fishing' as a sport here. Cheers Hodgey That is not a bad idea Hodgey, I have a day off work today so I may just find myself there dropping a soft plastic or two before they get there and have a little fish with my daughter and observe. If they seem like they need help (which I am betting is likely with so many kids and one or two teachers) I will probably do the same thing you did. I notice you are at Tuross Hodgey, I love to play around our southern estuaries up to and beyond Moruya (I am at Tura beach, Merimbula), we should go for a flick sometime. I don't know of any other raiders this far south. I have a little inflatable thing I paddle around in but most of the time which fits two comfortably but I frequently just walk the shores too.

I was so good at jigging back then, pitty it wasn't with a lure For those of you that's not from Sydney, "jigging" refers to skipping school. I was originally from Melb, we called it "wagging" - when I arrived in Sydney and heard someone say "lets jig" I thought they were referring to the Will Smith song... what the!

Bloody the big four ohhh this year I'm from Sydney, a teenager, and we never say jigging... it's wagging for us too! anyway, let's keep this thread on track, Jennings, do you live around the Manly area? Ha! Ha! Looks like we are showing our ages.
