Hey raiders,

Went to Port Kembla breakwall early this morning, arrived at 5:20am, and it was closed! /cry Saw a big ship in there docked against the wall.

We didn't have a plan B, so we just decided to wing it and go to Windang, just down from the boat ramp, 50 metres down from the bridge.

Had a few peckers nibbling my pillies here and there, rebaited a couple of times. On the 3rd time, had a better nibble, decided to strike, and whatever it was, it ran, and it had weight, I yelled across to my mate "I'M ON!" Had no idea what it was... I'm only familiar with bream and flatties in there... I thought I was on a Jewie. Gave a good 5 minute fight, got it in close, a nice salmon, measured 50cm. My first salmon, woohoo! Soon after we gave up, we got fed up with the strong current there, as well as getting snagged in rocks down there.

On another topic, I've seen lots of people saying that Salmon don't taste good. I bled it straight away. At home, filleted it, and made bite size pieces, with my special batter, deep fried, tastes completely normal, average, but not terrible as some may suggest! You really need to get the blood out, and after skinning the fish, you'll find some blood in the meat just under the skin, just slice it off. Although most other fish I've eaten, admittedly does taste better, but Salmon is still edible.

cheers.

Salmon is still good protein. Before I moved out of home (a long time ago now) I would keep a salmon about that size if I did not have much else, and gut it, leaving the head on.

Mum would cook up some rice, cut up bits of bacon, capsicum, corn, peas, shallots and stuff it into the cavity of the salmon. Bake it for a while (don't overcook as it is not a moist flesh) and serve it off the bone with some of the rice. Tasted alright to me and the rest of the family.

Now, the missus and big kids want all fish filleted, skinned and de-boned. I told them if fish did not have bones, it would be like eating jellyfish, however, they don't have my sense of humour.

Yowie.

Thanks for sharing, congra's on ur first salmon. Yeah I like eating salmon as well cut into thin cutlets salt and lemon grass, fried really quick and it comes out juicy. My wife makes two types of soups as well, yummy. If u know how to cook them they r a very tasty fish.
