reubs Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 Afternoon all, After a busy week I'm once again stuck in the office on a weekend however I managed to get out during the week for a flick with a day off for thursday and wednesday night looking good it was time to hit the water! So last week I wanted to have a crack at some salmon or tailor off the beach so decided to take a trip to north narrabeen with no results..However on wednesday night after a bit of googling and a bit of a read through the interwebs camp cove just inside south head had me feeling like I might be onto a winner. I read quite a funny post on this forum about this cove and its little sister nudie beach next door but seeing as though it was a weeknight figured it would probably be quiet and it takes a while to get to from parramatta!.. I took one of my friends out fishing for her second time ever and decided to soak some pillies whilst fishing two lighter rods with worms to find something in a bit closer to shore. The pillies were out on 2 setups, one was my 12ft beach rod (nothing fancy just an onsale shimano rod and pre-spooled reel) with a fiarly large round ball sinker tied to a pre-made 3/0 snelled 3gang hook setup off the shelf, and the other being a 7ft 6-8kg mojiko + 6000 reel from BLAH BLAH BLAH with 15lb main line, no sinker and the same hook setup with both sets of hooks holding onto a pillie . the other two rods were a 2-4kg 6"6' jarvis walker oldie that ive havd for years! with a force-ten(yep big quality gear here) reel with 8lb line and a 40lb black wire trace with clip (because i was too lazy to put on some mono) then onto a small bloodworm hook, and the same setup on another 6-8kilo 7" mojiko special.. there was nothing to be had on the "light" gear on the north side so I went down to the south side and cast close to the rocks only to find that it was too close and the rocks were hungry for hooks and sinkers.. As I went to check my pillie I noticed that the line was slack and having had a few pillies go MIA on me I figured that had been the case and it was an empty set of hooks i was going to be bringing back in...and then there was some weight on it that felt a bit like a rock....but then it made a run and i know for a fact that rocks dont run and I was indeed onto something.. Scanning the waters surface to see where my line was going in the dark was a bit fun and I couldnt see a thing and then this nice sized salmon made a break for the surface and jumped out of the water only to be towed in and beached by myself shortly after.. A nice fish and the only catch for the night...not a bad effort for doing nothing at all I thought, It was cleaned shortly thereafter and its guts were thrown out for burley but not much else was going on.. I spotted a small arrow squid hanging around one of the markers so threw a budget jig at him but he wasnt having anything to do with it.. Anyway it was a nice quiet night and something came home for the pot and to share with the neighbours! may we all have tight lines! Reubs
