Hi Fishraiders,

Can anyone give me some advise?? I have recently decided to take up beach fishing and have been spending my time at Wamberal/Terrigal generally at dawn with an incoming tide fishing with a whole pilchard on gangs (3 x 3/0). I have tried to find the channels hoping to get a Tailor or Salmon, however so far I have only landed 1 x 46cm flathead which I was happy with but still no Tailor or Salmon.

I am thinking about venturing to North Avoca on my next trip and was wondering if anyone has been catching the Tailor or Salmon there or am I too early for the season yet?? I have all the gear for beach fishing ie 3.8m Snyder rod with 650B Alvey so casting isn't a problem.

Any friendly advise would be very appreciated so I can catch my first Tailor and Salmon.

Cheers

Shouldn't be to early to catch salmon and tailor. Anyway north avoca fishes especially well for salmon i know that for a fact i don't know about tailor though. The north side of the beach about 150m down from the head land there is a very deep gutter that runs parallel with the beach which should hold plenty of salmon and other goodies. Another good spot on the beach is just in front of the lagoon, theres a bit of a moon shaped gutter which holds tailor, salmon and loads of dart. I've had the most success on beach worms as bait either store bought of if u can catch them yourself, i find that they produce a number of by catch species such as dart, whiting, bream and flathead.

Hope this helps :)

Try an arvo high session a couple of hours before a dusk high tide....unless you are up in the pre-dawn hours, tailor will usually show right before and after dark sets in. The choppers don't usually hang around long but the larger stray large Tailor will lurk well into the late hours...Salmon should be thick up your way now.

I to recently began beach fishing..

And like yourself I had shocking luck in the morning so i opted to beach fish at night.

I fished from 055 - 0700 and got nothing.

I caught 3 salmon the same night on sat night between 1745 - 2000.

Night is way better in my opinion when going after salmon, tailor and from what I have seen bonito (though I have seen many bonnies caught in the morning). Not sure why but it just works better for me personally and the bonus is you still get to sleep in.

If you get to your spot during the arvo it gives you a chance to scope the area for channels and gutters (something a struggled with till recently). I have most success on a paternoster set up using a No 5 start sinker and 2 number 5 or 5 mustad hooks on each line of the paternoster. I opted away from gang hooks as the first sambo I ever caught busted them up and I nearly lost him.Use salted pilchards as they stay on the hooks better then sit back relax and wait for your rod to bend.

This is just my amateur experience, but hopefully this helps.
