Hammo2809 Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 (edited) Hey Raider's Do you have to freeze the pilchards after they have been salted?? I have had mine in salt for a couple of weeks now and all the juices have stopped coming from them. So do I leave them in the bucket in the garage or do i freeze them again??? And if I do re-freeze them can they be thawed out and then frozen again after that?? Thanks for any advise. Cheers Edited May 12, 2012 by Hammo34
finbar12 Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Hi Hammo, i would freeze them to keep them fresh and if frozen they will keep longer. I guess u could re-freeze them but they will lose alot of there freshness. Hope its helpful
J Hooked Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Hi Hammo I freeze them and use them as my berley. That's normally after the next outing. For top results it's best to use the freshest bait you can get.
Benzeenees Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 Put them in the freezer. They probably won't freeze if they have a lot of salt in them. But they certainly won't rot!
Mr.KingSpooled Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Old smelly pilchards are excellent baits to use on yellowtail bait jigs and burleying for yellowtail I second that salted pillies are the bees knees for yakkas !! They burly well causing a nice slick and also because there alot firmer they hold together alot better when u need to chop up a fillet for the bait jig and they actually STAY on the hook
Hammo2809 Posted May 18, 2012 Author Posted May 18, 2012 Hi All... Thanks heaps to all your advise, I'm going to Avoca in the morning with salted and fresh frozen pillies & hopefully a good report to come home with. Cheers
Hammo2809 Posted May 21, 2012 Author Posted May 21, 2012 Well you wouldn't believe it!!! I turned up to Avoca at about 5.30am casted out a salted pillie, after waiting quite a while with no action I changed over to a frozen pillie and still nothing not even a bite. I changed location twice to better my chances but to no result. At about 8.30 I packed up and went over to Terrigal where I'd been on other weekends and there were a few guys leaving with there catches of Salmon. I gave it a go with a fresh one one but not one bite. Bugger!!! I think I might try Mullet strips this weekend. Cheers

Cheers A couple of guys in the fishing club salt their pilchards for a bit of bottom bashing and they salt them for only a few hours and then chuck in the freezer, they had said any more than a few hours and they dry out to much. Cheers
bharris Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 Make a brine and put them in leave For a couple of days in the fridge then dry them of and pack in bags tough on the out side and perfict inside still full of juice Sent from my GT-I9100T using Tapatalk 2
