350chev Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 (edited) Hi raiders, Had my first real go at catching squid and thanks to the help of quintrex480 managed my first. We only ended up with one but I was happy with that. We went outside as the wind picked up in the bay and outside was protected from that sw. Had a go dr the squid but no takers. We returned back into the bay and tucked ourselves in behind mollie, where with a steady burley trail going we managed 13 Trevally, 3 bream and a tarwine. I did manage a king, not the hoodie I was after but man was it a great fight on my shimano sienna with 8lb line, a set up I normally use for bream . The kingy went 55cm, quick snap and off he went. I was hoping to tangle with another snapper but they where a no show. I met a fellow raider Formosan who was dr for those hoodies, nice to have met you Quintrex480 said that I might bump into you. Anyways great day overall hopefully I can score a hoodie before they decide to leave Cheers Daniel Edited May 13, 2012 by dan76
quintrex480 Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Mate! well done on scoring the squid and king, even if it is a rat, it get's easier from here on, and hopefully that hoodie will be on the end of your line soon. but look at the by-catch! trevs and bream, I'll take that any day! ehehhe
J Hooked Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Fantastic mate! With 8lb line it would have been a nice fight!

Keflapod Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 (edited) Hey Dan, Well done on gettng a nice squid AND a light tackle kingie ! I did it once on 6lb trace and barely got the fish in before the trace wore through. Mate, can I ask: How far behind molineux point gives you protection from a SW or W wind ? I ask because I'm considering using that spot when the wind gets up in the winter. Also, do you use a reef or sand anchor in there ? I guess you would fish there on a rising tide and get the burley to drift towards the rockwall, right ? Tony Edited May 14, 2012 by Keflapod
duckegg Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 Well done Dan, pretty sure I saw you out there. I was in the 25 Boston. Did better than me, blew a steering hose to start the day. Lucky I had a spare and some fluid. Got a couple of squid and DRd everywhere for no takers. Were some fish sounding near the drums but werent interested same outside. To cap off a crap day lost my DR ball near the Merries. Not doing that again. 480 and Formosan you guys are killing the pig at the moment well done. Good effort mate. Johno

Johno Hey Johno, I know what you mean buddy. Luckily we faired pretty well by the end of the day. Thanks Daniel

duckegg Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 Dan will be sure to say gidday next time I see you out there. Been struggling to regularly connect with the kings, just time on the water and finding the squid. Been struggling to find the squid out of the Hacking which is where I am based. Been getting some rats but the best I have done so far is 80cm. Have jagged a blue groper of about 12-15kg out at Jibbon though which went ballistic. Johno
Keflapod Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Thanks for your reply Daniel. I'll give it a go as soon as the wind gets up Tony
