fresh Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Hi all, I'm fairly new to all this fishing stuff. I've always gone as a kid but never really took it seriously. I've bought a few basic bits and pieces and I don't think any of my gear is suitable for rock fishing or beach fishing. Can you please recommend a good fishing spot near Kingsford that's safe, has some light at night (if possible) and is still on the shore? I'm not sure if that's possible but I want to start somewhere and I'm very new to the area so any help is greatly appreciated. If the above ISN'T possible can you maybe give me a few hints and tips to go rock/beach fishing safely without setting me back to many $$? Thanks guys. Cheers, Chris
fresh Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 Oh and I don't care what type of fish I get I just want to catch something. If there's a certain type of fish that you think I should be targeting then please let me know (oh and tell me how). Thanks. Chris
luderick -angler Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 There is Yarra Bay near La Perouse, the Cooks River breakwall, Coogee and Maroubra Beach also these should give you a chance at some good fish

joel.pringle Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Thanks luderick - angler but are any of those locations calm and or safe? Yarra Bay has no surf, and you don't need a beach rod for long casts. If the swell is low you can fish from Bare Island in safety. Malabar near the boat ramp is calm too, and a few fish around. Hrgh
fresh Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 The gear you will need just in light conditions if you don't need to cast that far are a cheap shimano real, some are very good for price in a 2500-8000 size and 8 to 12 foot rod about 3-6 kg and just 14 pound mono if fishing for bream and luderick found near rocks use a float with prawn or weed as bait Thanks guys. I hit Yarra Bay last night for a couple of hours, I was using Pilchards and pretty much everything you just said except i think i have an 8 pound mono line. I only had 1 decent bite all night and i lost the fish. I got hooked onto the rocks more than anything and ended up having to cut my line and leaving (it was getting late anyway). Is there anything similar to Yarra bay that i should be looking for? or maybe give Yarra Bay another go but do something differently? There were a couple of other guys there as well and they hadn't got anything either. Chris

fishythings Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Hi Chris, I live in Kingsford as well, at the moment we can catch blackfish, drummer and bream in eastern suburb coast, if you need accompany just pm or email me. Cheers, Andy
fisholb Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 sure why not? I read online that the cooks river is still polluted. I'm not sure if the fish caught off the breakwall r OK to eat. Can someone confirm this? Thanks
luderick -angler Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 I have eaten fish off the Cooks River wall mainly blackfish, any fish which are migatory should be okay to eat particualy the kings and trevs and bigger mulloway as they are migatory. I would ahve second thoughts about the bream and mullet though
fisholb Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Do you reckon eating fish from polluted waters can actually be harmful ? i found this warning about cooks river using google. http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/333219/cooks-river-warning-sign.pdf
