elferoz777 Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Hi Guys, A pet hate of mine is getting pillies that literally melt of your hook before casting or during. I use gang hooks and single hook set ups and for the most part it works however some pilli batches I get are just shocking. Can anyone suggest good bait and where to get it from? I mainly use servo prawns (worked well for me thus far believe it or not), servo squid and pillies from fergos at fairymeadow (servo style). I have tried them from ait shops but they still seem flimsy Some say fish markets are best as the fish are fresh rather than frozen like servo prawns or pillies. Thanks El Feroz
Spooooled Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 i would suggest trying W.A pillies aka tweed and if you could find them snap frozen even better
A.dawg Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Just ask for iqf phillies at any Most tackle shops have seen them at 1 servo but now most servos sell the worst of the worst phillies when they used to have w.a

Yowie Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 You need to buy salted pillies, as they are tougher. I think the servo ones are not salted prior to freezing, however, a couple of times I bought Bluebait from the servo, they were smaller but had been salted prior to freezing.
zaki10 Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Yowie is right mate I had trouble with my first time I started buying pilchards because I was going through the same thing, I would cast and they just come straight off. Pilchards are really soft bait so if you get the salted ones like yowie suggested you have a better chance of them staging on your hooks and the best brand is the tweed bait ones from WA now another trick when you're using gang hooks is to tie a knot around the tail of the pilchard it holds it in perfectly when you're casting! If you live in western Sydney there's a few tackle shops that sell them, there's one on parramatta road auburn and woodville road in Guildford he stays open 24/7 so anytime you need them just go there.
