camb1988 Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Thinking about heading off long reef Wednesday in my tinny for the first time. Just wanted to check what the boat ramp there is like? Cheers.
bump73 Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Can be pretty sketchy in any swell, here's a nice vid on how to get back in... Ben
dabble Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 be careful at longy its not an easy one. OK if your tinnie is small but i would go down and watch others first
camb1988 Posted May 21, 2012 Author Posted May 21, 2012 Cheers guys, thinking I'll head down and have a watch before I take it out just to get a rough idea on how to go about it
andrew399 Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 every one always says longy ramp is bad but in all the vids iv seen it doesnt look any worse than little manly ramp...
Juggs Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Having your boat slammed into your winch post or car Boats damaged on trailers by swell Or running your pride n joy up into sand I wouldn't use it , I stop for lunch very now and then and watch it in use while at work Amusing to say the least
Testlab Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Fishermans Beach boat ramp brings back the memories.... Broken arms, bloody scalps and cracked skulls, broken jaws and noses, crushed hands and plenty of damaged boats to match the damaged humans. I used to man the surf rescue radio room there and spent several seasons with the Bartender jet rescue boat that was kept underneath - definitely for the experienced only.
Slink Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 (edited) Totally agree with testlab , it is sketchy to say the least .We launch there all the time and it is alot different from low to high tide. If you are prepared to run your boat flat out up the beach then it will be easier ( check that your trim motor will handle the sudden lift ) , but if you intend on parking the boat against the beach while your mate holds it as you get the car then you will have to know what the go is there. As I said my mate and I fish from there heaps and we have had alot of dodgy times where the boat was in danger of being swamped , but we tend to rest it on the beach unless there is a big surge then I will drop him on the sand and go back into the bay while he gets the car and trailer ready then we have to time it right so that we get out safely. Also you will need a snatch strap or strong rope to pull the boat to a safe place so that you can either use an electric winch or try and hand winch it onto the trailer. Dont try and winch the boat on the trailer from the water as you would at any other ramp , you will pay the price. Best advise is to go and watch guys come in and learn from them , ask questions and check it out before you risk yourself. Dicko , you are kidding yourself mate , you dont use the ramp do you ? Very hard in anything from 0.08m upwards. 1) Slippery ramp. little or no traction at times. 2) Big drop off on both sides, very dangerous. Not for the faint hearted, need to be able to beach your boat and drag it up the sand. Butch
adjustedpete Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I live here and own a 14ft tinnie and I dont use that ramp. they say its for the experienced, .I say its for the risk taker. I tried it once when I thought I could handle it (risk taker)...lol and things didnt work out well. Almost swamped her getting it in and retrieve was not my cup of tea, launcing my boat onto the sand next to the ramp was a once only adventure. just my 2 cents worth.. I do wish that something could be done to make it safer, as its ideal for getting to good grounds in a short time.
