weaponx Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 G,day Raiders, Was looking forward to getting out on the water all week. Come Friday afternoon start prepping the boat for an early start then my lights all decided to blow. Off to my local takle shop for a new switch panel long story short back in business in 1 hour. Up at 3 head to Drummoyne ramp. Meeting a mate at 6 at the spit put the boat in go to start it. Flat battery .Tops, after 20minutes she's now up and running starting to charge up. Thanks to the guys who blew there steering hydraulics for the good conversation while I was waiting, must of been the day for it as there were a few boats having trouble that day. Finally headed over to the spit and picked up my mate. Headed around north head for some trolling as I was letting the line out my Xmas tree lure takes off nice bonnie to start hooked into a couple more then decided to head out for a drift fishing 60-70m bang nice flatty then bang 32cm snapper then another flatty both around46cm Headed back in as it was hard for my mate to hit the bottom with his lite gear. Drifted out of north head into a N.E direction then my mates rod buckles over he is having a ball 30seconds latter ping brings up his line both hooks are gone. Caught a fair bit of wrasse, bakers was starting to think I've done my dash for the day, so I chuck out an unweighted ,ganged pilly. While baiting up another line my mate sports a large fish at the back of my boat he asked me" what's that" my reply was "that's a shark". Drop the rod and wind in the pilly quick in the mean time I'm throwing bits of bait at it to keep it near the boat but wasn't interested u get the pilly close to it and it didn't want to know so after watching countless fishing shows I need to twitch the bait so it looked injured well now let the fun begin this thing has taken off Like a train tighten the drag and it's still going nuts, then comes the summer salts, breaching thrashing a top fight for such a small shark about one metre long.( pretty sure it's a Mako. I turn to my make and said when it comes in it will been green as and it didn't disappoint thrashing around every where ,I had only been on for what felt like 2 minutes . One of my first sight fishing experiences and one I won't forget to soon. After about ten my mate rod goes agin this time same thing peeling line off to the point we are starting to see the bare spool, he tightens his drag and gets some line back on. Then it breaches way out the back and you guessed it Ping she's gone a few choice words later we decided to call it. Dropped him back and headed home .What and absolutely fun day even tho I had a shaky start.
sphoukari Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Thats a solid shark, how long did it measure and was it caught in the spit bridge area or outside the heads. Thanks Anthony.
J Hooked Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Great read mate! That shark would have been amazing to catch!

weaponx Posted May 24, 2012 Author Posted May 24, 2012 No it's a mako it's really easy to tell with the shape of the teeth head shape the keel at the tail the size of the fin behind the dorsal fin and I worked on fishing boats in north Queensland where sharks are a daily thing.
kadavu Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 na definitely a mako teeth are curved white pointer has vertical pointed teeth
