Any F/R have information on river /estuary fishing at Merimbula in Winter? Neil.

Sure do mate, I am a local around these parts. What would you like to know?

Bream and flatties you will find year round, the tuna season has been quiet. The local big game comp a couple of weeks ago didn't even produce a legal fish. We are a bit sceptical if we are going to have a tuna run at all this year. It is not looking good. Tathra is as freaky as ever, for some reason you will always manage something either in the bega river or out of the wharf. Pambula lake always works for bream around the leases and you may even pull the odd jewie out of either system, just look for the deep holes. Trevors are always fun for little ones around the local jetties and the beaches constantly fish well it seems for salmon, tailor, gummies (I caught a couple of smaller models last night off main beach). Merimbula lake also produces good fish around the leases, and spencer park on any given night on any given tide will see you hooking up on bully mullet, bream and trevors and everything else passing through the entrance on its way up the back of the lake.

Anything else you would like to know just ask.

Hi Jewstalker, my daughter and son in law have shouted my wife and I a week in Merimbula early July. I have a 12ft tinnie suited to estuary fishing which I am planning to bring with me. I enjoy soft plastic and bait fishing, also vibes. Have heard that there's a big lake connected to the sea (tidal) which sounds very promising. Do u have any info which would be of help in locations for flatties, bream or whiting. Also like to break things up with a bit of beach fishing for tailor, salmon, etc. Thanx 4 ur reply, Neil.Just saw that u had put another post up with good info. Can I obtain a descriptive map of the area so I can identify the places u have suggested? Thanks again.

Hi Battler, I don't get to the coast very often and usually go to Batemans Bay or Tuross. I tend to steer away from mags because they fill me with the desire to get away regularly and that frustrates me cos I don't have the resources or time to do so. I do love every time I manage to get to the coast as I get a bit fed up catching Carp in the Bidgee. Thanx for replying, I appreciate it mate.

Flatties are best fished for in the Bega river system north of Tathra, most of the river is relatively shallow and it is currently open to the sea also. Tathra is about a 20 minute drive from Merimbula and is one of my favourite locations. It is mostly a sandy bottom with quite a few weed beds around which hold good amounts of flatties, bream, EP's and Bass. Mullet and garies can all be found in there in good numbers which are great live bait for the local jewies which also smash plastics and one of my mates caught a 95cm version a month ago on a peeled prawn on his bream gear.

Merimbula lake (the lake you were referring to) can be a bit tricky sometimes but when cracked it fishes better than any system for whatever you want. There is a false reef put in the lake by fisheries which is starting to come together fish wise, the GPS marks of its corners are readily available online. If you fish up the back of the lake around the leases near the houses at Millingandi you will find good whiting and bream which love poppers and live beach worms but any part of the lake can be productive at any given time.

Pambula lake can also be hard to crack but fishes very well at times. It is just south of Pambula on the way to Eden. I have caught bream, whiting, tailor, salmon and jewies in this system. the options are endless here which can make it seem difficult but keep an eye out for the deep holes and drop a livie/soft plastic down there, you may just come tight on a monster.

If you are fishing with soft plastics you are coming to the right place. This is the home of Bushy who designed the best soft plastics suited to our Aussie fish especially around this area. ;) In fact he made the first Squidgy DVD just down the road from here at Mallacoota inlet. It truly is a slice of paradise. You wont go home disappointed. If you like I will message you my number and when you are here I can properly explain details.

Hope the info helps.

Hi Luc, wow thanks for the in depth info on ur home territory. Can't wait to get there now...u got me revved up. Don't have a GPS capability in my little tinny but just cruise an area looking for drop offs and usually observe a likely spot at low tide for signs of habitation. I do have a depth sounder and use it to help find likely spots. Haven't been using soft plastics for long but love covering lots of territory using different types and retrieves. If u would like to give me ur mobile we may even catch up for a session. Gr8 thing about this site is that everybody is so helpful. Cheers Neil. Now how many sleeps till....lol.

You are welcome. I know how to find the reef and would be happy to show you. It covers quite a large area. Also if you feel slightly adventurous it is an easy run over the bar most days and fishing off hunter reef in the bay can produce some nice snapper. See post on snapper flatties and a seagull. also just off long point can bring in a nice mixed bag of snapper morwong and flatties with the added chance of a king (bit late in the season now), john dory, and other reefies.

I sent you a PM with my number and would be more than happy to show you the local haunts and I am always keen for a fish.

Hi Luc, Will be in touch when I've settled in and will look fwd to learning about ur area and hopefully we'll be able to wet a line together. i should arrive late on the 1st July. Does the road between Canberra - Cooma - Candelo get closed very often? Cheers, Neil.

Sometimes in the winter Brown mountain closes because of snow and ice... I have been turned around before when heading toward Canberra. Best advice I can give is check your weather forecast before you leave. If it is sunny, no probs, if it is raining there is a good chance there will be snow. Another thing you could do is ring the police station a Nimmitabel and ask if there has been a snow fall. They will be more than happy to fill you in as they have got bugger all else to do with their time hehehe.
