Do people ever target them land based? That would be really interesting...

Of course they do, take a drive to illawong bay one night and see for yourself. Why is that interesting anyway???

Hi

I'm going for hairtail at walsh bay land base on friday night for 1st time can someone advise me on tackle setup i need please .

thx in advance

Float with a light stick in it, have it weighted so it's just buoyant, gang hooks with Pillys or whole yakkas. You should go for a drive to illawong bay one night as well and check it out. Hairtail at Walsh bay???? I don't think so but with fishing you never ever know.

Good luck

It's interesting because I wouldn't mind giving it a crack, but always thought I needed a boat and recently sold my boat.

When hairtail invaded Middle Harbour in the late 70s we would fish em from the shore; little tidal flow in the harbour so we did the most simple of rigs: live yakka with 4/0 through the back and about a metre of 2Okg mono trace. Sometimes added a small sinker as well. Interesting that some fishing gurus now saying ditch the wire trace for more strikes.

I fished 4 lines Tuesday night, 2 x 30kg mono trace and

2 x wire trace. Both set ups got hammered constantly. But did lose a monster hairy just before it surfaced, he bit thru the mono.

That's interesting Mimyo, maybe keep the mono for if the bite's really shy but stay with wire if they are on? Actually was just thinking back and we got our harbour hairies back then during daytime. Maybe mono also worth considering during gentlemen's hours.

Guys rather than asking specific locations, which might be packed, why not search; deep, clean, water and little current seemed key back then. There's a fair few places in the lower harbour like that :biggrin2: .
