ABL
Hi Raiders, I guess it had to happen One slip and my 2000 is submerged in saltwater. Washed it in warm water and crossed fingers to no avail. Opened it up this morning and salt crystals are already forming, amongst the grease and the gears. I am thinking: Stripping it Soaking each part in meth? Reassembly using photos I took as I stripped it Add plenty of grease as I go. Any comments or suggestions pls. Thanks, Mijaro
Zdenk01
Hi Mijaro, Be careful how much grease you use. This link will give some idea on how much to use. rockfisherman
How long was it submerged? Because if it wasn't in the drink for long it shouldn't be a problem, I've had a few reels go in but submerged them in fresh water when I got home... And they worked fine afterwards and still do. Benzeenees
I suggest you have a look at the Alan Tani website (www.alantani.com). He has detailed tutorials for a lot of fishing reels.
A.dawg
I've done the same with my twinpower but once I fished it out of the water I ran it under a tap drove straight home and submerged it in hot but not boiling water 3 -4 times 5 minutes each time to dissolve salt and it worked the same as before obviously had to get it serviced that week but between being submerged and serivec I did use it without problems

I don't think my Penn has as many parts, but all info is relevant. All I need to do is know how to put it back together. At my age and memory it will need to be in one sitting, with the help of strategically taken photos as I dismantle. In the meantime I am thinking of spraying the guts with inox? I won't get back to it until next weekend mikjaro
benm
Just a tip. I use one of those boxes with many separate compartments, so that as I pull my reel apart, I place the pieces in sequential order into the compartments. That way I know which parts to put back on before the other. Be careful as some parts can fly out like springs in the bail arm. Also, don't use just any grease/lub, as some are corrosive and can eat away at any plastic parts or clog up. I recommend proper fishing reel grease. Inox is good. It fixed by cheap jarvis walker reel after it went for a swim. Canola works well too.

I had heard about submerging the reel in fresh water truth is I didn't have the guts to do it. I will know better next time. Will let you know when the rebuild project is finished. abecedarian
Try olive oil from the can. It fixed by cheap jarvis walker reel after it went for a swim. Canola works well too. I'd avoid vegetable oils, they have this nasty habit of going rancid which will clog your gears and bearings.
