Robofish Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 Hi Raiders, After a pretty poor day's weather yesterday I very nearly cancelled my plans for fishing the last couple of hours of the run in tide at Dee Why beach last night. I was hoping for a Jew but no luck - it ended up to be a beautiful evening and I had a couple of bronzies and two nice tailor before the kelp made me pack up. I fished circles last night (first time on the beach) and was really happy with the hook ups, particularly on the sharks as they got nowhere near the trace. Flake for dinner tonight - what a great eating fish. I am determined to get into some of their bigger relatives but it might have to wait for the water temp to pick up again. J Hooked Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 Hey Dave. I've gone to the circles as well. Just need to remind myself not to strike when holding the rod, because I've been pulling the hooks out. Live and learn.
shak4g63 Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 (edited) About a month ago I was chasing jewies at a central coast beach and used 8/0 circle hooks on 40lb trace the result was a couple of sharks . The hook stays in the corner of the sharks mouth keeping the leader safe. it was too dark to take pictures but here's the end results. Ok maybe not I can't paste in a picture of flake fillets fried just imagine it guys! Ok don't need to imagine here's the pic Shakeel Edited June 11, 2012 by 1 last cast
Robofish Posted June 4, 2012 Author Posted June 4, 2012 Yummo! Out of interest did you fish a twin circle hook rig or just one? I tied a sliding snell with the circle hook sliding and a j hook on point as I wanted lots of the circle hook clear of the bait to let it do it's thing. Dave Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
shak4g63 Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 Yes I was running a sliding snell rig consisting of 2x 8/0 gamakatsu circle hooks using 1/2 a small squid, top hook was pinned up about 1 cm from the top of the bait secured with a trusty half hitch and bottom hook went through the squid body twice, pulling the hook and line through to the other side to keep the bait well presented and was running a size 7 ball sinker running rig to a large swivel atop. I just let it sit in the rod holder and let the line load up, once I felt pressure gently lift the rod and felt the weight of the shark as it gave aggressive head shakes. Mind you I had sore legs and back for three days after. But the most fun part is seeing a full bend on your heavy surf rod as you fight the beast and guide it through the surf and waves. Once landed it goes berserk on the sand and you think twice about removing hooks from its sharp gob! The most difficult part was skinning and filleting the shark, their skin is like rough sand paper and stronger than cow hide I found this really good video for skinning gummie sharks Here's the link , I did mange very good fillets with minimal wastageAlso I think the smaller sharks are safer as they don't have the higher levels of mercury the bigger models have, and hence not safe for consumption Cheers Shakeel
Robofish Posted June 5, 2012 Author Posted June 5, 2012 Thanks for the info mate. Dave Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

shak4g63 Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 I would love to go for a beach sesh tomorrow night but the mrs is dragging me to some dinner. But Sunday night narabeen looks the place I got some snap frozen squid lined up, beach worms and banana prawns can't wait it's been 6 weeks since my last fishing session, I have ended up spending around 200 bucks on lures since then. The fishermans logic if i purchase lures it will hepl me ease the pain of not actually fishing Geez. I hope the weather holds up this weekend tight lines
niclebum Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Sounds like fun! If you don't mind me asking where were you located on the beach and do you take your good gear on the beach such as a baitrunner? Thanks
Robofish Posted June 8, 2012 Author Posted June 8, 2012 I was fishing northern dee why last week but it could be anywhere in the surrounding beaches with gutters. I fish a light outfit and a heavier alvey outfit Dave Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
