Hi

I am from Zimbabwe, The nearist Johnson mechanic is about 12 hour drive for me.

I am having problems with my 1990 60 vro which I have just been given.

My Problem:

The motor cuts out as soon as iput it in gear (revers or forward)The only way I get it to run is when going into gear go streight to full throttle, after about the 3rd or 4th time it usuly takes off, going forwards no luck in reverse, once going it runs well until I go into idle then it cuts out, I have tryed to ajust the accelerator cable but no diferance.

Any help would be much appreceated

Thank you in advance.

Sounds like a broken fuel pump diaphragm

Would explain why the motor only runs with high revs and dies when the revs drop

Just a guess tho wait for Huey to give his advise

Hi, a bit hard to help from the other side of the world, but I am guessing you have made sure you have good basics. The compression is even, you have three strong spark and are using the right plugs-QL77JC4(if it is a 1990 model), and you have a good supply of clean fuel. If all that is checked, then make sure the carby butterflies are not been held open at idle and the "sync and link" is right with correct adjustment of control cables. Then make sure the engine is not running too lean, the mixture screw wants to be two and a quarter turns out from lightly seated. If all this checks out it would be a good idea to service the carbies with correct reapir kit and make sure there is no air leaks on the boats fuel supply. Once sorted and it idles in gear make sure it is coming upto temp at low speed.

These engines are one of the easiest and best outboards ever made so do the above and see what happens.

Cheers,

Huey.
