Avalon395 Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Hey Guys, Just bought a little tinny for the kids. The 3m tinny came with a 4 stroke Yamaha 25hp with only 80hours on it. Took the kids out today for the third time using the boat and after getting 300m from the boat ramp, the engine cut out.... It still turns over. I can get it to start every 5minutes and run it in Idle for about 2minutes before it starts cutting out again... I check oil, replaced the fuel - everything has been checked Can any recommend any suggestions?
Avalon395 Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 (edited) Did you open the vent on the fuel tank? Yup - vent is open. Everytime, it cuts out, it sounds like it is running out of fuel... Edited June 14, 2012 by avalon395
The Incredible Hull Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 having a total guess here... but if you've checked everything... maybe try and replace the fuel hose, the one from the fuel tank to motor, get a bigger one, as you said sounds like not enough fuel.
austral Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 my 15hp yamaha 4 stroke gets flooded very easily, it will start for 10-30 sec then cut out. the best way around it is to start it at home before you go and have it running for 5-10minutes just to make sure everything if running ok.. when the motor floods you can usually smell the fuel and see straight fuel running out a small hole just under the cowling. if your stuck out there again disconect the fuel line and try to start it a few times( this helps drain the excess fuel)and when it does start up make sure you put the motor in gear and start moving before you re connect the fuel(other wise it will just flood again). hope this helps..
Testlab Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 It's probably not been used for some time and one of the following applies: It's had ethanol fuel in the tank and it's gotten a dose of watery sludge through the fuel lines; or the fuel system has been polluted by muck stirred up from recent use; or the fuel hose and primer bulb are no good or connected backwards. As suggested replace the fuel lines and primer bulb, they are cheap from a variety of sources. Then remove the fuel filter and either clean or replace it depending on the type. This will probably fix the problem. If not the fuel pump may be replacing or a new diaphragm. Lastly it may need the carby pulled apart and cleaned. It sounds like fuel starvation - you must remove and clean or replace the fuel filter. Then see how it goes (or not).
Avalon395 Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Thanks for all the help guys! I will have a play around with it this arvo/this weekend and report back here. Please keep the suggestions coming. I am fairly sure it is fuel starvation - just have to find where the problem is now.
Nolongeramember Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Fuel problem and my guess is the carby/s have got a bit of junk in there. I had a similar problem with my 60HP Yamaha. The built in filter wasnt filtering properly. I have now disconnected it and run a small inline automotive filter. If you have checked everything else take the float bowl off and clean inside and check the jet holes are clean aswell. You may have to take each one off and hold it up to the light. Only takes soemthing very small to clog it up. Let us know how you go
