MrChipsnSalad Posted July 7, 2005 Posted July 7, 2005 When I go down to the local tackle shop, there is such a choice of soft plastics, that it is difficult to know where to begin. Sometimes I think the manufacturers design these things to catch fishermen, rather than fish. I tend to stick with the squidgie range. I have caught a wide variety of species on this brand. But only on the larger shads. Has anyone found another product that they find to be fairly consistent in results? I have tried for years to catch fish on metal spinners, but apart from a few trout at Jindabyne, I have been largely unsuccessful. I have just purchased a few Halco slices. I intend to take them down to the beach at Dee Why, and give it a whorl on the weekend. Weather not withstanding...
tyrone07 Posted July 7, 2005 Posted July 7, 2005 Hey mate have you got any ideas what you want to be chasing because all lures will catch a whole different range of fish. Your slices you got would be good for pelagics such as salmon and tailor etc. Just cast out and the retrieval varied such as a fast retrieve or stop start. Then you have the bigger plastics which i find outfish baits for lizards 20-1. Then the littiler plastics will produce bream but can get very frustrating. This is only brief but give us some more info on what you want to chase, where etc and im sure sum1 will be able to help. Cheers Mate
MrChipsnSalad Posted July 7, 2005 Author Posted July 7, 2005 Well tyrone, I am willing to catch anything that is stupid enough to take the bait. Mostly my wife tells me that I should be buying fish at the fish shop. It would be far cheaper. Seriously, I love flathead, and agree that the plastics are great for that. On the other hand I have been grabbing a few bream at Flagstaff on the plastics. But, given the season I really want to have a go at Tailor and Salmon. Back in South Africa, where I come from, we could catch tailor (Shad as we called them), on a banana peel. But here they are harder to come by. I enjoy the active nature of fishing with lures. It is far more interesting than a bait. At least you get that anticipation with every cast. When you fish bait, you (I) sit for ages, wondering and waiting. Lures put you in the action, even when you don't catch a fish. At least you are casting and retrieving more often. You are probably now seeing why I call myself MrChipsnSalad. Mostly I don't catch much. But I love being out there with a chance.
bombora Posted July 8, 2005 Posted July 8, 2005 Hiya MrChips; I live (rent ) above one of the shops at The Strand at DY (good to keep tabs on what's happening there when all ya gotta do is look out the bedroom window) and love having a spin there, except from the rocks rather than the beach. Your beloved Squidgy shads have got me samson fish, kings, trevs, tailor and a million pike from the low rock ledges there, so give it a go (when the swell is flat or maybe 3feet max)!!!! Poppers are good too cause the water is quite shallow. Metal slices etc you gotta be carefulm with cause they'll snag damn quick. Also have taken some nice fish on 'old skool" three inch Slider bass grubs in white-glow-pearl and also chartreuse. Taken a couple of whiting and small dart in summer with small squidgies from the beach too, but it's hard yakka. Gutters are great at DY at the mo. You weren't spinning up near The Poles at DY a few mornings ago where you. I passed a guy by while walking up the beach for a surf. cheers Bombie
