Harbour Hauler
Hi all, i just wanted to hear readers views on the correct strength line for landbased squid fishing . Mainline and leader.?
CarlRak
If you're fishing from the wharves into water that isn't very rocky/kelpy you can go as light as 4lb main/4lb leader (if using small jigs). If you're doing the above but using bigger jigs maybe use 6lb main/6-8lb leader (as the weight of the jig when casting will stress your line and knots). If you're fishing landbased in the harbour casting into rocky/weedy areas I'd go a minimum of 6lb main/8-10lb leader and keep your jig moving. I'm no guru but the above has been working for me fine. Hope that helps.

Harbour Hauler
Perfect Thanx , i really wanna get some squid results. I have just got hold off a large selection of quality jigs and one of my biggest fears is loseing them in the weed.
Piss'n'Broke
If you dont lose a jig every now and then, you arent fishing deep enough for squid. Gets to be rather expensive, but hey catching squid makes it worth it. Dan
sharknett
Went to a squid seminar recently and they were advising 15lb braid and up to 40lb leader to reduce losses. Also said to strike hard at the slightest touch as they usually grab the middle of the jig while it is sinking.
Harbour Hauler
Funny you should say that coz the last few squid have done exactly that , ive failed to get a spike into them. Striking hard though doesnt result in a hook up just lost and spooked squid.

I'm with Sharknett on the heavier line class...well at least til I have sussed out the area. I go about 20lb- 30lb. I don't like losing my expensive jigs to kelp beds. Once I'm happy I know the lay of the land I switch down to a 8lb fluro leader.
