stevo-72 Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Anyone one else having the same problem and not able to sound any of the water colum after 300m? It really gets lost and packs it's bags and goes to lunch. If anyone is looking at buying one and using it at great depths hold off because it's not only mine that's doing it. Placing the 1kw Bigfoot transducer has not helped it also.
LeoB Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 G'day I've found you need to change the settings manually to get good readings at depth. We have had about 1000m offSydney on a 600w transducer. Although that was maxed out so far, and very patchy. But we regularly get bottom in 7-800m. Is the sounder running the latest software, or is it a gen 2? Are you running it in auto or manual mode? Cheers Leo

Cheers Leo It's a GEN 1 and did the software upgrade 3 months ago...so will check for the latest update.... Depth was on auto setting set on 50khz and 98% gain. Thanks stevo
LeoB Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I've found you should also slow your ping speed down. As the transducer sends a beam to bounce off the bottom and back, and it obviously takes a lot longer in deep water. Also found while traveling at troll speed you need to turn the gain down, especially in rough conditions Cheers Leo

Thanks very much for your help and fingers crossed it works. Cheers stevo.
LeoB Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 No worries mate. I'm running the same software. I've found the hds temperamental out wide, but love playing with it haha. I've found the book depth sounder secrets pretty helpful, but it's definitely practice makes perfect. If you have any more dramas let me via pm, and ill give you my email, I'd be more than happy to help. It's taken me over a year! Also how much did the transducer set you back? I'm thinking of upgrading as ours starts to struggle past browns. Cheers Leo
