craigbutcher Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Hi Raiders, Been cracking some solid snapper of long reef recently. Caught a nice solid snapper this morning on sunrise this morning before work. Cubed for 2 hours before sunrise, then it was RED CENTRAL as soon as the sun was up Also, saturday morning hit the eastern suburbs rocks are with 4 loaves of bread for berley & bait. Landed some nice DRUMMER including this 47horse. It ran deep and hard like a groper, all time fun! Butch
sydangler Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Awesome work mate. I'm dying to get out and get stuck into some good snapper.
pepi.. Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 That is a cracking snapper & a stonker drummer! well done!
ginko Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Butch what bait did you get the drummer on, and do you have any tips to avoid the undesireables that the burley brings? I had a quick session off the rocks and caught about 9000 sweep, crimson-banded wrasse, kelpfish etc. No drummer! I was burleying with really well soaked bread and cabbage weed, and fishing with both prawn pieces and cabbage weed, both under a pencil float and then using a tiny sinker and no float, and fishing into water that was about 4m deep but with lots of big boulders here and there on the bottom. BB Hi Ginko, Sounds like you are on the right track. The thing with Drummer is that you will mostly (not always) catch them during the colder months, so now is a good time for them. They are located hard up against rock ledges and bombies, so you need to land you baits on the ledge or just next to it in the zone. If you get stuck hitting sweep & wrasse, switch over to fishing for Drummer with GREEN CABBAGE, like you would for blackfish. Except, dont run blackfish tackle i.e. 8lb leader etc, run at least 15-20lb leader so you can turn their heads! They go extremely hard! PM me if you want me to show you the ropes on day. Butch
hottyscotty Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 ginko, how much line from the float is let out? sometimes they are near bottom, especially when the sun is out. maybe do without the float and let the bait drift to the bottom with 00 or 0 ball sinker. but not all the way or else you get a lot of kelpfish. if you get a lot of rubbish fish near the surface, berley one way and cast the other way. that way you get less pickers. also, as the sun rises, drop the bait at your feet. a lot of times they are already there feeding hard up against the rocks.
