Hi, that is a fair price spread so without knowing what your budget it it is hard to answer, but my vote would go to the HDS-5 Gen2-they are by far and away the best of the list you have and I doubt you will find a Gen 1 version, unless old stock, and even then I would stump up the extra for the Gen2.

Come boatshow time, for orders placed with us at the show, we will have GREAT prices on Lowrance and Simrad electronics so come by and say hi on stand 166.

Cheers,

Huey.

Stay away from Lowrance if your looking to fish off-shore alot, they are ok for bays rivers but you need to Drive there sounders and play with them alot to get the best out of them.

Hi, Furuno do make good gear and why I stock these too but from the list he gave you will not be able to get a Furuno for those sort of dollars. The HDS-5 Gen2 with what it can do and the range of transducer you can fit is hard to beat for its price and then we you throw in Structure Scan, NMEA2000, Sonic hub and more no Furuno has those features. It is horses for courses and yes a $8K Furuno set-up is better than the $800 HDS-5 Gen2 but you would want it to be also. I would not say all "pros" use Furuno and it is like saying all taxis are Fords so Fords must be better then everyone else- lets not get into one of these mine is better than yours.

Cheers,

Huey.

Get a furuno sounder all the pro's use them so that must say something.

I agree , Get the furuno.. for off-shore work ,and i think its Aussie made...As for fords being taxis as a comparision to the Pro.s having furuno sounders i cant agree with this as contracts and deals goven this industry..Proven performance and word of mouth has gotten Furuno a quality name and no mass advertising and angler sponserships to push there product. IMO. Check out LOWRANCE on facebook and you will see the happy customers they have world wide ...NOT. Whem your warranty is up... toss it in the Bin because your head will spin the amout they will hit you with to repair the sounder... the up side is they will offer you a new sounder at a discounted price thats some how close to the requested repair bill to the old one.

You can buy a furuno sounder for $1800 with a gps so don't know where you pulled 8k from he clearly isn't operating a trawler and furuno is a much better sounder than a lowrance and yes most pro's do use them at least one things for shore you know better than everyone else... I don't own a furuno just a suggestion as I've been in many boats I would love either but my preference would be a furuno.

Hi, yes you can get a Furuno combo for a bit more than $1,800(you will need a transducer for it to work) but most "pros" use the higher end stuff that costs alot more than $1,800. Also for half the price of $1,800 you can get one of the units the orginal poster asked about and why I gave my opinion and I have used and stock them all. IF he had listed the Furuno GP16070F and said he is looking to spend about $2K I would of said that is my pick, but then again for the same sort of money you could get the HDS-10 Gen2 which as a combo for the average recreational fisherman is a superb unit and I have used many of these.

Marine electronics is hard and weekly the manufacturers are coming out with new gear and only two days ago I was told about the new A series from Raymarine, that also gets fitted to alot of Pro boats and they sound great and priced very competeively. No electonics are made in Australia-which is a shame, but that is another topic of discussion.

Cheers,

Huey.

i have a furuno 620 and its a awesome bit of kit but you have to play with them just like any sounder to get it to work well, 1200 odd with transducer

water temp fresh in the bay you have to adjust them every time you go out

last trip out i had baby snapper showing on the bottom and salmon above them and bigger kings cruising in and out of the mayhem

dedicated sounder and gps units always combined units are a compromise on screen space and not worth the hassle
