fisholb Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Hi all. After years of using mono, I finally decided to try braid. Below are some questions I want to ask any braid user. What type of reel is best suited for braid? Spinning/baitcaster/overhead What type of fishing? Beach/rocks/boat Best knot for tying? Hook/swivel/lure/line Do you need a mono/fluoro leader? Can you use braid for trace/leader? Thank you very much.
Spooooled Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Yes you do need a mono fluoro leader, and you could use braid for trace but i would suggest you dont because i personally think the fish will get spooked by it, i use the uni knot for all tying and sumtimes i use loop knot for lures. and i also suggest not using it on many rocks thats just my 2 cent

Thank you very much. hi mate I use braid on my spin and bait cast reels You can use braid in application, but some people like to use mono on the rocks for its abrasive resistance You'd first connect your braid to a leader using a uni knot or an Albright knot, I prefer the uni knot, some people say the Albright knot is better but the uni knot has never let me down... You don't want to connect your braid straight on to the swivel, you'll find that line twists and tangles will occur. Yes you need a leader, if your hard up for cash, vanish make a good leader with value for money that's pretty good. There's nothing stopping you from using braid as a trace or leader, but you will be wondering where the fish are In conclusion braid is fantastic, it's near zero stretch allows you to feel every thing as it happens on the other end of the line, as a begginer to braid I would suggest you try fire line as its a little bit stiffer and easier to work with, it eventually softens up, I still use fire line today. Good luck Fishingphase
griffox Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Most reel types can be used, it's more about the type of fishing you're doing. However, with spin reels, the reels designed for braid tend to have the thicker bail arms and good bail roller set-ups. Usual story, no point putting $100 line on a $20 reel, use a better quality reel with braid. Same with the rod, usually a braid specific rod is graphite, but a little longer so as to give a little in the tip, then muscle up in the middle/lower sections. As for types of fishing, in general as follows: Good for soft plastics, lures, jigging, light trolling, bottom bashing (except where really snaggy reef can cut it), light surf spinning... NOT good for rock fishing (or anywhere near oysters!), heavy trolling, or for people who won't learn new knots! Double Uni or Slim Beauty for light (up to 20lb mainline) braid to leader knot (lots of options here but double uni is easy to tie and reliable). Bimini double with Albright/Tony Jones/Slim Beauty for heavier classes. ALWAYS use mono or fluoro leader. I use 2 - 3m of fluoro for light spinning and squidding. 4 - 5m of mono for trolling and heavy jigging. Get a good set of braid/surgical scissors and learn those knots!! Tight Lines!!
fisholb Posted July 24, 2012 Author Posted July 24, 2012 thank you very much for the reply... i use uni knot all the time and it never failed me...i read somewhere that palomar is the best knot for tying lines to hooks but im still trying to perfect it... im using penn 10x 30lb for trace/leader...so ill probably stick with it for now... i bought power pro 15lb/30lb/50lb braid to test atm...my mates uses sufix 832...a bit more expensive than power pro... my other question is which will you prefer to use as an all rounder/ general purpose reel for braid??? i just bought a penn slammer 760 spooled with 50lb braid and will test it out this weekend. i mainly use bait for fishing. ie yellowtail, pilchard, chicken, prawn.
fisherman666 Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 I tie mono to the reel with an arbor knot. Only about a layer of mono. This is done as tying the braid directly to the reel can slip. I then albright special my braid on. I then tie a mono leader with another albright special. I prefer the albright as the leader slips through my rod tip nicely.

I'll have a go on using the Albright.
