Hi everybody, I will be living in Ballina from December onwards. Anybody any input/advise/comment regarding fishing out of Ballina, northern NSW (Areas, how far off shore, seasons, types of fish, recommended minimum boat size/range to cross the bar and go out wide and back)?

Any comment highly appreciated. hph

Ballina entrance can be bad, plenty of boats capsize on the bar, the locals go down to Evans Head to launch for offshore fishing, much safer, fishing is great , I'm not a local, suggest join the local fishing club also there is a great little tackle shop in Evans Head who is worth talking to, cheers

Actually the Evans bar is probably worse than Ballina. It's tiny & very shallow & can only be used in

good conditions. Every bar up here is hairy, you just need to pick your times & path through.

The fishing from Evans up to Tweed can be excellent. It really depends on what you target.

Good snapper on plastics atm on the close reefs of Ballina & Lennox Head.

In summer spotty & spanish macks are very popular & the good news is that you don't have to travel

out too far to find them.

As for spots there are heaps. Just grab a gps marks book. The North ground off Evans has plenty

of snapper & trag in winter & Riordons off Ballina produces pretty much anything.

Plenty of the wider marks on the 40 & 50 fathom reefs produce kings & amberjack. Cobia can show up anywhere!

You will have to travel alot wider for marlin. Probably better off heading to the Tweed & off

the Gold Coast in summer for these in close.

You will get striped marlin & big blues year round of the Danger point & Cudgera canyons

out from Tweed.

Problem is having too many options & not enough time to fish. :ranting2:

Cheers,

Grant.
