Beach Jew

G'day,

Would anyone be happy to share their technique for beach jew? Rigs, weight, depth, bait... exact location? joking

Interested to know how to fish the gutter without getting tangles, so I guess its more about the rig and weight?

At the moment i've been casting out over waves or in gutters and within a couple of minutes my bait is either at my feet or 5kms down the beach with a million twists in the line.

Appreicate any input?

I posted a similar question about this, advice I got bak was to walk further down the beach away from the rip that's pulling you across, or alternativly grab some star sinkers. These will help anchor your bait a bit better. I tried a star sinker the other night in a pretty nasty rip and the they worked a treat. Landed a couple of salmon. Only problem we ran into was getting distracted in conversation ad the tide was going out and the dam things ended up being so well anchored we couldn't being them in and ended up busting the lines.

As far as jewies on the beach I've never caught one, always had high hopes though. Fresh bait, and bigger tides (1.5m+) seem to be the go from most of my research...

Good luck! Hope to see a report for a big beach jewie soon!

im no expert on jewies, but for beach fishing it sounds like you need a heavier sinker and like Gatts suggested, one designed to dig into the sand Ie: star sinker

not sure what rig / bait your using but try these:

1) when using gangs: i like to put a swivel directly onto the set of gangs. helps heaps with line twist

2a) livies - sinker above the hook: star sinker rigged running on main line. swivel. leader with livie

2b) livies - sinker below the hook(casts further): mainline - swivel - leader, about 1m, to star sinker (fixed). shorter (about 1/2 meter) offshoot for livie

3) good old paternoster: mainline - swivel - about 1m length of leader. tie a loop at the end and attach your star sinker (so its fixed). tie dropper loops into the leader about a forearm apart

The dark of the moon and a few day either side is good with a high tide anytime near dusk or later.

The dark of the moon coincides with big tides normally and the bigger the better.

Fresh bait is the go and if you can catch tailor or yellowtail or squid that day it is prefereable.

Deep water is better for jewies in holes on the beach or a beach that quickly drops off and near any headlands off the beach is worth a shot.

30lb gear is minimum and a good casting rod and reel with plenty of pulling power is needed.

If you star sinker is getting buried too much every few minutes just give the sinker a bit of a lift and many times you will get a hit as you move the bait.

40 to 80lb trace and about a metre long as this doesnt twist as bad in the surf and a quality swivel...one that actually swivels.

Fish the tides from 2 hours before high on the dark nights to half way to low and if not bites go home.

Burley works as well to bring the tailor and yellowtail around with chook pellets and crushed up pilchards good.

Good luck with it and be patient
