sphoukari Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 Went out Friday in the middle of the day for my first time as allot of fishos been telling me you don't have to go really early to catch them. Borrowed dads tinny and took of from home at 10am. The wind was blowing which made my drift difficult, have to invest in a electric motor or a sea angor for now. Picked spots that the wind was blowing me away from the rocks and also the water was flat in those sections of the bay, which i had dad on the phone occasionally to guide me when things got tuff. One squid short of bagging out but just could not get that 20th squid. All the squid where small the size of my palm so there must of been breeding recently. Dad and i being addicted to egi fishing, dad just finish installing a board like the tackle shops in his office and we put the jigs on that we have collected over the last five years. Yesterday i lost two jigs, came home washed the gear and went in dads office and replaced them back in my tackle box but i know dad he will be at any tackle shop he comes across to replace the same jigs back on his board. Going out on a friends big boat offshore tommorow so hopefully some of these fresh squid give us some quality fish. Cheers Anthony.

squidboy Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 Now that is how you squid fish, BEST. Top effort there mate, sometimes something different changes the ball game.
mimyo Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 Bloody hell champ, great haul of squiddies there and your old man has more squid jigs than some tackle shops.... Awesome!!! I hit the harbour last night to stock up on squid for bait, I wanted to get some like yours but could only manage 3 x 2kg southerns.... Going to eat them instead. Good luck today, hope you get a few.

Try Rushcutters Bay for the smaller ones.

If it was land base you fished, consider it good, sometimes we come home empty handed from land base. Edited September 15, 2012 by land of sponges

quintrex480 Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 (edited) thought the landbase squidding you did a while back was pretty good, but put you on a boat and you're unstoppable! we all know who's going to be smashing them kings when they come in pretty soon and look at that collection of jigs! I do understand the obsession however, I stock up the same, sometimes I have so many that I am lost for which ones to try I see that you have some of those daiwa emeraldas jigs, do you find them any good? hope those squid land some big fish on your offshore session, you've definitely put in the hard work for them, good luck! Haven't had much luck with the kings but then again i haven't put in the hours on them, they say that they are around so i might just give it a go this week coming. All sort of jigs work some better than others, its a matter of which ones to use at different conditions and different time of the day. eg since you asked about the Daiwa, i find they are very good when there's not much current or drift because they are a lighter body and sink slowly parallel down like a prawn, all jigs are meant to imitate a prawn but some just sink and dart like a bait fish or injured bait fish to the squid. Also every one talks about spots and jigs but personally i feel the that not so much what reel you use but in what type of rod has a big role, for example, when you hold the rod pointing towards the water and you can feel the squid being fineky on your but and strike and catch, well thats one squid you might of missed out with a normal rod. With all type of fishing, if you put in the hours you will only get better and higher catch rates. Hope this helps you out. Cheers Anthony. Edited September 16, 2012 by land of sponges
LungFai Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 that's some serious collection of jigs there, puts to shame my 1 jig that i carry around as back-up if i can't catch a yakka to slide onto the home made chopstick jig
