andrew399 Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Just after a bit of advice. I have a 2002 50hp yamaha that has never skipped a beat. Im having a bit of a problem when I go to decelerate - generally anywhere from 3500 rpm +. The throttle seems to get stuck as Im pulling it back towards me. I end up having to use a bit of force and kind of ramming it until it gets past where it gets stuck (seems to be the same spot every time). Is this likely to be a problem with the gearbox or simply the throttle cable? Thanks
hookmeup Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 If your not having a problem getting it into & out of gear it will be throttle or cable related, actually you didn't say if it was tiller or front steer ? If it's tiller sounds like cable for sure Check where it runs & make sure it's not fouling on anything, no kinks, bends etc, then check where it connects to your linkages or carby, maybe give it a squirt, hope this helps
andrew399 Posted September 18, 2012 Author Posted September 18, 2012 thanks mate - it is not a tiller steer. There is no problem getting into and out of gear or accelerating. It is just when trying to back off - which as you can imagine can be pretty hazardous at times!
hookmeup Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Ok could be a few things then, elimi ate the sims things first, I'm guessing it's operated by cables. Not hydraulic, check cables from front to back, particularly motor end around linkages, make sure linkages are all tight,if all good must be in control handle, I don't know how capable you are but it's fairly easy to take control off side & take backing plate off & have a look inside, move it back & forth checking all functions, you should be able to see where it is getting stuck, there is often a detent spring in there but not usually at the 3.5 k rev mark, this is only normally for for/rev area, may or may not help. It worth a shot
The Incredible Hull Posted September 4, 2016 Posted September 4, 2016 Hi Raiders, bumping an old post. I'm having a similar problem, where the throttle when accelerating is a little stiff, and when I try to back off and to go slower its very stiff. So stiff I end up accidently yanking it back and it slows down way too fast and I jolt forward out of my seat, pretty dangerous. The only way I've over come this is to tap the throttle with my palm instead of grabbing it. Anyone experienced this and know what needs to be done? Thanks, Dave
Testlab Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 Check where the inner cable exits the sheath at both the control and engine ends. Look for damaged, frayed or dry spots - this causes it to bind at those points as the inner slides through the outer. Lubricate the cables - if they've been neglected the inner can chew into the outer somewhere along their length and you'll need new cables. Liikewise if they've stretched or had a too severe bend in them (they wear out). If the cables look good then check the control cams and rollers - the cable inner will connect to a bell crank, which often has a cam or roller at the other end.. A broken roller can make it bind up, requiring a good pull to get past the crack or broken bit. If you don't have skills leave it to an expert - you don't want it stuck at full throttle unexpectedly.
rickmarlin62 Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 had the same with my 60 yammie ..where the cables lay in the outboard well the throttle cable outer had cracked and the inner spirals were rusted thus sticking to cable.. my money would be replace throttle cable...rick
Mullatt Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Agree the best option is to replace the cable, but if lubricating I wouldnt be using grease of any sort as it picks up grit etc and holds it. In the past I have just used a bit of transmission fluid or the like...always worked a treat!
