Hey guys, going over to Fiji in a couple of weeks. Im not after the usual charter questions but instead im taking a travellor rod and my Curado baitcaster with me but im wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of what lures i should be taking?

Was going to take some poppers and some plastics with me. Not sure if i am allowed to take plastics in regards to customs etc? Has anyone been over there and taken plastics from Australia?

If so what sort would you recommend and what size jig heads would be more suitable? Any recommendations on a few poppers also would be good.

My reel is rigged up with 12LB braid but im not sure what leader size i should be using. Mainly land based fishing but may find my way onto a boat.

Any tips or suggestions much appreciated...

IMO I don`t think it matters what you take in lures to catch fish as they seem to eat anything. Just depends on where you fish as to what to use.

The main thing you have to remember is the quality of the lure as in some areas they only come one size Huuuuuuuuuuuuge.

How ever there are times when the place does go quiet. Have a great time and make sure you have a massage lady waiting for when you return as on a good day your body will be stretched to the limit.

I just got back from Fiji about a month ago. I took my own gear as I like landbased fishing. I fished mainly land based with a few boat jaunts thrown in. I was hoping for a decent GT to hop on my line but to no avail but I was still fun.

My set up was as follows.

7 Foot 6-8kg Shimano Raider II Travel rod

Okuma trio 40s spooled with 15lb braid

I took a selection of hard, soft and metals. I have attached an image of the majority of the lures I took.

The bibbed lures worked the best accounting for about 80% of my catches such as Trevally, Coral Trout and mackerel. I used these as casting lures and trolled them as well.

My fav was a Rapala slashbait 10 followed by my storm Bara - Both in pilchard colour.

The poppers worked ok during the morning but seemed to attract mainly barracuda.

The blades got a few bumps but no hook ups...It's the first time I used them.

The metal slices didn't work for me, which surprised me.

My advice is go early or the first part of a rising tide if you are land based as all the fish scramble to get their lunch before anyone else.

I also took some plastics. Atomic plazos and some pre rigged Tsunamis. They didn't really work for me offshore as the current was too strong and land based they didn't do I from me. That being said it could have been a different story as a 1.5 metre Spanish followed up my Plazo.

Here's my older post about Fiji

Hi mate Fiji customs are so laid back it's ridiculous. They seriously won't worry about your soft plastics . In terms of poppers and lures its pretty well the same as here. Red and white seems to work well. You'd be amazed at what the locals throw at the fish and produce. We had a local who had a bicycle tyre tied between his main line on his handline for a bit of give and his lure was so rusty it was wasn't silver anymore. But we must have pulled in 10 tuna that day. Depending on where your going but the island locals know exactly when and where to fish. Somedays they would say , nah not worth going out today , but I think that was an excuse to drink kava and when they said it was hot, they were spot on. Good luck , I got my PB Mahi mahi there , 102cmGood luck Andre
