CarlRak Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Raiders, Went for a wander/flick this afternoon and stumbled upon some primo blackfish weed. Won't have a chance to use it before saturday/sunday so was curious as to the best way to keep it? In the fridge? Bagged/unbagged? Any other tips? It's the best stuff I've found so far so don't want to waste it. Thanks Carl
arpie Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Hi Carl Well done on finding some nice weed! i usually just gently squeeze out any excess moisture and 'tease' the weed so that there are no 'clumps'. I then 'spread it out' onto kitchen paper. It is important that there be no clumps in the weed, or it be too damp. These 'filaments' of weed are then spread over the top of the kitchen paper and virtually become 'perfect size' for putting on hooks! When most of the paper sheet is covered, I then roll it up loosely and then fold that 'tube' in half, which is then stored in ziplock bags in the fridge. Each ziplock bag will take 2 or 3 of these 'folded sheets' and in a heavy fishing session, you may use 2 or more folded sheets. It is really easy to take the individual serves from the sheets, to put onto the hooks. The weed will last a couple of weeks in this manner, sometimes longer. good luck - I hope you get into some blackies cheers Roberta

Jewhunter Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 If you're going to use it with in a week you can also get a big clip lock bag, half fill it with salt water put your weed in & keep it in the fridge. Stays very fresh & there seems to be very little difference in quality. Cheers, Grant.

I found the weed in a freshwater stream, running into the salt, but above the high tide line. Can I still store this in salt water, or is fresh better? Cheers Carl

Give it a go & let me know please! Cheers, Grant.
quintrex Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 Green weed can also be found in freshwater streams well above tidal influence. Is this attractive to Blackfish or must the stream be salty?
arpie Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 ....Green weed can also be found in freshwater streams well above tidal influence. Is this attractive to Blackfish or must the stream be salty?..... So long as it isn't the slimey stuff, they'll go for it. THe slimey stuff is just impossible to put on the hook! Most of the weed used in northern NSW (Yamba etc) come from the runoff from the cane fields, so totally fresh water & the blackies love it! The preferred weed up there is black & wirey, too! Moral of the story - grab any that you find & give it a go! Cheers Roberta
