mgj Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Went out and found kings on the surface and down deep. The sounder was alive with fish! Also found big salmon and some bonnies. I tangled with some big kings as well as rats on fly and had some prodigious bustoffs. Hooked - UP Mark
Guest Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Well done Mark I think I might have to get some tuition from you as my 12 wt is still a virgin How about a bit of a run down on what gear you are using, flies and methods to help some of us amateurs. I tidied up your post as well,I hope that was OK Regards Stewy
PRED-ATOR Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 WOW nice fish there mate looks like awesome fun on fly gear.
craigbutcher Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 You are a dead set legend mate. We have spoken a few times outside the heads around the colours! Blow away by early season Kings. We encountered a big school off Bluefish earlier this week, however, I gave up on them as I presumed they were just big Salmon. Nice work!

Hooked - UP Mark Nice work Mark, you might need to up your gear and start fishing abit more if your already getting blownen away by kings . I love the new sounder!!! Did you get that pic I sent through to you the other day? Im still yet to get the gps position but as soon as I do I will send them through to you so you know exactly where Im talking about. Dan
4x4fisherman Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Awesome job, looks like a great day out.
mgj Posted September 26, 2012 Author Posted September 26, 2012 (edited) Stewy, It looks to be a good season! Thanks for tidying up the post. A 12wt is one of my favorite kingie rods for solid kings,I also use a 9wt for smaller fish.An intermediate line is good for kingies. I try to 'match the hatch',and that means small baitfish patterns at the moment. This will change to bigger patterns as the summer progresses. I am always happy to help out. Dan, I just looked at my messages and thanks for that pic-I know that area. I was using 25lb leader on that big king in bad country-I would have been OK on 30lb.I'm sure you and Greg would have had no trouble with those big kings. The sounder is a revelation-I'm still learning how to use it. Butch, I remember you,it won't be long until the kingie season swings into gear. Good luck. Mark Edited September 26, 2012 by mgj
rportelli Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Going out tomorrow morning were they hanging around north or south head?
Guest Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 I think its time you showed me how to catch big fish on my 12wt I would love to tag along with you on a few trips if you have space. I dont mind sharing any expenses and will try and keep my mouth shut when being taught Complete novice on big fly rods but I have a good set up Regards Stewy
