Fished early this morning around Jibbon Pt from first light for 6 tailor around the 33 - 35cm mark, only chopper size, and 1 salmon just under 60cm, which was released. Trolled pilchards.

Moved out a bit for 4 flatties to 45cm, plus many spikies.

Gave it away about 7.30am, not much swell but the surface slop left over from yesterdays' wind was short and sharp in my small boat. Rather bouncy, hardly another boat to be seen until I headed in and a few boats were heading out.

I use salted pilchards, unsalted ones can be too soft. Some of the salted ones are not too straight, those will cause considerable line twist, even with a swivel.

You can also troll a small pilchard shaped lure. When the fish are really on the bite, a hook with a bit of white cloth wrapped around, leaving the point exposed!

On a ganged rig of 3 x 3/0 silver hooks, 4202D I think they are, with the eyes already opened and the eye bent towards the point. Just join the hooks together and close the eyes to stop the hooks from coming apart.

Or you can use the 4200 with the eyes straight, just bend the eye to aid in the ganging process. Don't bend the eye down where is joins the shank, as that is the weakest point, bend the shank about 1mm above the eye. You will need to open the eye a little bit so the next hook will slide in, then close the eye.

3 ganged rigs are now being sold so it just a matter of tying them on.

Have not fished in the Port since early July, when the fishing was just about dead. Found the fish outside, so have been heading out for a feed each time.

Was told that the salmon are in the Port, the fish should be starting up shortly from my past experience. Had a swim at Wanda today, water is still cold so probably cold inside as well.

Read a couple of reports recently in the Telegraph, mentioned that bream and whiting are starting to show up (can't always believe the newspaper reports). I will try again in the Port very shortly. Let us know how you go.

Hi fellas I fished up south west arm today and got a 46 cm flatty and two just legal whiting. Got bitten off by what felt like a nice flatty. Moved to the sand bar across from ship rock and picked up two bream about 30 cm. there was a bit of surface action in that area as well.

A mixed bag, enough for a feed.
