andrew399
I just noticed the other day when I spun my prop in neutral that there was a clicking noise coming from inside the leg. Im pretty sure it never did this before. Some research on the net indicates that it is due to the shift linkage needing adjusting - does this sound correct? And if thats it can someone talk me through how its done...! Thanks

cheap charlie
Yes, thats your issue. My 70HP Johnson did the same after I changed the water pump out. My issue cam about because I spun the shift rod a round a few times when I had the leg out not realising the rod was threaded thus shortening it. Found the issue after i put it all back together. i had enough adjustment in the shift cables to fix the issue. 50 50 shot as to if you need to tighten or slacken the cable to fix the issue. Just make a small adjustment untill you eliminate the clicking in neutral. Be sure to check prop engagement in forward and reverse before you call it job done. Hi Charlie, the shift shaft height is very important and all you have done is a band aid fix. Your clutch dog will not be meshing properly with the gears so it takes less than an hour to drop the g/box, adjust the shift shaft height correctly and then re-fit and make sure the control cables are adjusted correctly. Cheers, Huey.
andrew399
So Huey - what would I be looking at? about $100? And what is the danger of doing the 'bandaid fix' mentioned in other posts in terms of likely damage? Or is your post directed solely at Cheap Charlie and all I need to do is adjust the cable? Hi Dicko, I was talking to Charlie, but without knowing what outboard you have hard to say what the problem is that you have. It could be as simple as inncorrectly adjusted control cables or more serious gearbox problems. Cheers, Huey.
