Hi Raiders, as the title suggests I'm wondering how garfish fare as a bait for jewwys.. Caught a couple today and have a session in mind for Saturday so I kept them in hope that they would be a good bait

Thanks In advance

They are great lives full stop. Kings, bonito, flat ties, big bream, jewies you name it and they'll probably eat it!

If you haven't kept them live which is likely, they go well as a fillet bait for good bream. If they are decent size garfish then take a slab off and use if on a snelled rig for jews.

I rate them very highly as a livebait and they go ok as a cut bait too.

thanks for the replies i was just thinking of halving them or just chopping the heads off and embedding two hooks in it do you think this will be as good?

I have tried garfish many times for Jews both live and dead with no success not even a run but when using them live during the day for kings and other pelagics they are almost as good as live squid and by far better then yakkas and mullet.

Just wondering if you can share the garfish spot with me as I'm looking everywhere for them and the only time of the year I hav success is in winter months June and July when the kings are less active.

Gars are great Jew bait. Never tried them as a slab/strip bait but live they go off.

Only problem is i like eating them better than Jew so invariably they end up at home rather than on a hook.

Agree, much better than jewies to eat.
