Gillmaster Rods

Hello Fishos,

i am interested in buying a Baitcasting setup. ive never used one before, but would like to get one for fishing from a boat and throwing 12gram squidgy lures around and bottom bashing.

Im thinking of purchasing an Okuma VS200 or a Nemesis sometime soon, and ive seen Gillmaster rods that are:

IM8 graphite

6 foot 6 inches long

4-6kg

9 stainless steel guides

cork grip.

approx $100

Has anyone had any experiance with these rods, and can give me some feedback?

Right now i got a 3-4 kg Shimano stella that i got for around 70 buks, and i love it, so is the gillmaster roughly the same type of quailty etc? (im not after black diamond quality)

Thanks!

If your spending $100, it would easy to get a better known rod than what you mentioned. A decent Daiwa Procaaster is less than that! Call ABA. I'm sure they have plenty in stock!

Jocool,

your right about finding a better brand for the $100 mark.

i was looking around on ebay and found the rod i described above, i bidded for it and won it for $61 delivered.

i guess, i wouldnt find im8 for that price in stores? or would i ? :tease:

Now i just need to look for a Baitcaster, im after a okuma nemesis, would you happen to know if its better to add Fireline to it or Braid?

thanks champ!

How do you know its an IM8, its probably just some cheap material? Its a dodgy brand from asia that gets sold in markets and on ebay, let us know when it breaks or when a guide ring pops off. I don't know of the nemesis in particular but I give okuma as a whole the big thumbs down also

bashir, i hardly catch fish anyway, so i dont think my rod will work too hard :074:

Ive got an okuma inspira, i got that from ebay also for 80 dollars brand new, have not had a problem with it, its been 2 years, works fine.

lots of my rods and reels are cheap, ive got a 20 dollar big w fibreglass 4-6 kg rod, that has not had a problem with it for the last 3 years, works perfect.

i cant afford the high priced good quality reels, wish i could.

now for the braid, any benefits from fireline?

thanks

From my limited experience with baitcasters I reckon you'll be much better off with a true braid rather than fireline, I use Fin-S 20lb on my baitcaster, its much more supple and less wiry than Fireline.

WAKD,

what sort of lures do you throw around with ur baitcaster?

also would you reccommend sticking with a spinner rather then a bait caster?

if like to hear your opinions

thanks mate

i know this is an ancient topic but i felt i had to defend the gillmaster name.

Yes the gear is chinese made but they are not cheap shit.

The brand names outsource to some of these same factories.

Gillmaster was actually an aussie company in WA and had a decent size storefront.

The owner "cooly" also had an abay shop and sold a few things on there.

They sold entry level gear but also had some higher level.

They did have quality control and their better rods and reels were made to a decent specification, unlike a lot of the junk spewing from no name factories.

As with most things, you get what you pay for but the gillmaster rods especially were actually excellent value.

I have a couple of their IM8 carbon baitcast rods for 10 years now and they are still going strong.

The chinese have come A LONG WAY in the last 10 to 15 years.

They got hold of all the CNC machines and technology.

All you have to do is hand them an order to specification and they will make it.

There is so much junk because sleazy operators dont care about the quality of the product or the materials used.

I agree with you mate. I've got a Gillmaster graphite surf rod I got in 2004 and it's still going strong today. I even caught a dolphin on it once, yep, a dolphin (by accident, it took a huge live pike...no joke).

Another time, when I was on holidays, it was on the back of my ute when I pulled into the carport and I forgot it was there. I drove it into the roof and there wasn't a mark on it.

I don't know the rating of it because there's nothing written on it at all but when I caught the dolphin, I had an Okuma Epix EB-80 on it which has a 15kg drag and 60lb braid. I thought it was going to snap and I could hear it making weird noises but she held strong and has since caught other big fish.
