Sydney Squid

Went for a arvo squid session with dad off the rocks, landed a few nice size squid but non were bait size. Looks like these will go on the dinner table. Took a picture of the biggest one of my dad holding it weighing at 2.2 Kilos. Overall good arvo of squidding with loosing only one squid jig which was a cheapy anyway.

Nothing wrong with anyone asking. The op doesnt have to give an exact location. I for one would

be happy to know which waterway it was caught in, eg Syd Harbour, Botany Bay or anywhere else.

If everyone put up photos and didnt give at least which waterway they were in, then the fishing

reports section would just become another brag section.

Read Hodgeys pinned post about dispelling the myths.

There is no secret to squid fishing, they are just about everywhere. Mum is in hospital at the moment at Randwick and dad and i go for a flick on the eastern suburbs for an hour before we visit mum. We try and go when there is a westerly somewhere in these winds that are all over the place at the moment. One arvo we would go to Coogee and another to Maroobra, Try and get somewhere where its safe.

In reference to the previous comments, I think it was more the lack of tact to asking the angler for his location.

The least that could be done is recognition of Anth's efforts and then a polite location request.

Thanks mate, got news today that she is coming out, so our next report would be from the south coast as we don't need to travel to the East.

You might be right there mate, maybe that's what set off the other fish raiders comment which I think was noted in a polite way but didn't worry me and did not get offended from anyone as nothing bad was said from either party's, just keep the peace as this site is for all of us to see what's going around in the fishing world. The only reason I don't respond much to locations about squiding is because in the past i tell people the truth and they think I don't want to give them locations or spots. This is what dad has taught me and I will share it with fishraiders if they want to take note as I asked dad and he said its ok.

To start off with locations and spots, Squid are basically all over bays and the coast. When you are squiding it is basically like any other fishing, you have to keep on moving until you come across them and even then there is so many you can catch before you move again and find a different batch depending on how long you want to squid before you move on to target the fish that your after with some nice fresh bait, your squid that you just caught. I think most fishos haven't got the patience for them or run out of time before the change of the tide is about to happen and don't want to miss out on their Snapper, Kingfish or Jew session etc, and that all boils down to leaving it short of time, not allowing a couple of hours to gather bait.

Secondly technic plays a big role. Squid some days are more aggressive than other days, that is something we are trying to work out as we take many written notes on all our sessions. There is a couple normal technics such as casting and retrieving or casting letting the jig sink and jerk. I use about 3 or 4 technics as dad uses many more when they are hard to come about. We have picked up many ideas in the past from seminars and have created alot of technics ourselves through different conditions what they prefer.

Also colour jigs plays a big role on different days as we found early morning or late afternoon we use dark or natural colours and in the middle of the day we use bright colours like your pinks or orange, cloudy days white are a gun.

Keep a eye on a gentleman called Paul Carter (sponsored by can craft) next time he is in Sydney doing a squid seminar, as dad has been to many and most won't tell you much other than some standard ways but Paul gets more involved and dad rates this guy as one of the best in the country.

Hope this has helped a few fish raiders understanding a bit more in targeting squid. Like any other fishing the more you do it the better you get, just don't loose too many jigs on the way as they are not cheap.

Squidding is one of those types of fishing we all WANT to do but Like a lot of people, time is the constraint. We all want to get on the fish at the optimum time so I invariably have one squid and 10 yakkas in the livewell. Squid always gets the fish. If I spent a few sessions fishing only for squid, I think that wouldgive you the right info to get good bait on a regular basis.
