Shed1 Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 (edited) HI All, Early start on Botany Bay this morning, great conditions, light winds. Set off to Towra Point for a spot of SP fishing and have a first go with pencils for whiting. Nice flathead on soft plastics so with dinner in the esky decided to give the pencils a go, Strada Viral 70's. Then...... I hooked what looks like a prehistoric whiting with teeth, I have no idea what they are, landed 3 with 2 over 47cm! Not even sure if they are edible? Photo, not very good, attached. Also managed a nice Tailor on the pencils Cheers Edited November 24, 2012 by Shed1
Blackfish Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 (edited) By the look of the photo, Longfin Pike. http://australianmuseum.net.au/Longfin-Pike-Dinolestes-lewini/ Over 47cm's are certainly good size. They are edible but I would put a few fish in front of them in eating quality stakes. Or SabreTooth Whiting. Edited November 24, 2012 by Blackfish
Shed1 Posted November 24, 2012 Author Posted November 24, 2012 (edited) Thats them, thanks mate. As far as edible goes with our track record we can't afford to be fussy if we want a feed Edited November 24, 2012 by Shed1

Also managed a nice Tailor on the pencils Cheers [/quote ] Long Fin Pike, are the edible? Mate scale them cut them up the gut cavity and stuff them with lemon slices. Wrap them in grease proof paper and slowly roast them in a moderate oven for 20minutes. When finished remove the fish and eat the bloody paper!!!!!!! Pike =
iconnolly Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 I've read that these Pike are THE live bait for Jewies in some places. Not wure if it's this particular species or not.
Davemmm Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 Yeh completely inedible. Not a bad live bait when smaller but they do make a great slab bait for Jew. Dave
Yowie Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 The short fin pike, with the yellowish skin and slightly thicker body, is a stinky and not really edible fish. The long fin pike, or snook, is actually reasonably edible. Have eaten a few caught from Port Hacking, and they are a popular table fish in Victoria (though Victorians also eat a lot of shark or 'flake')
rjc123 Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 Yepp Pike Gun jewie bait, especially live. Those are too big for livebait so maybe whack some fillets off them and fish them on a snelled rig for jew. Cheers, Tom
wezbre Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 Hey there, I love using live pike for Kingfish. They have been very successful for me in the past and would use them all the time. I found that Usually large Kingies would take them. Cheers,Wes
