stormy Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Went out for a fish this morning, off the ocean rocks, seeing that the swell was down to less than half a metre and the day looked to be overcast but hot. Water temp was 21.5C and looked ideal for some ocean run blackfish. First cast saw the float just continue downwards steadily. Beaudy I thought, but it was just over weighted. Took all the lead off the leader and it was still sinking. Hmm, one that eluded my fine tuning. Swapped floats and cast back in. Float continued going downwards. What the heck!!! Started to retrieve line and the rod buckled over to a solid fish. This set the tempo for the next hour and the fish kept coming. Bites were mostly tentative but the fish were big fellas on the whole. Got three bust offs on big drummer, which were seen in the clear water and estimated in the 50cm - 60cm range. Don't think they even knew they were hooked until a few seconds later and then they ran straight for the ledge. We normally stay for about 3 hours, but after an hour, my keeper net was hard to lift out of the pool. A quick count showed 19 fish, so I called it a day. My mate, 2 fish Bob, landed 6 healthy fish and was very happy. Whispering Jack had a knee replacement last week and when he heard about todays session, he was very unhappy. A school of dolphins cruised past and they were almost close enough to touch with the rod tip. They like blackfish as well, but kept heading south. An old couple from Siberia were also there, and he caught 12 big fish also. He asked how old Bob was and I asked him how old he thought. He said, 78 or 80 yrs old. I almost fell in, laughing so hard. Bob is 65. Had a great session, released a bunch of fish and everyone is tired from the hike back out to the cars. My best fish was a hen of 45cms to the tip of the tail.

Centrepin Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Klaus, Fantastic. Great to see fish of that size. You have me inspired. I may have a look at my spots on Sunday if the swell stays down. Geoff
kermadum Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Very nice. I've been hitting the blackfish in the harbour a bit lately, and you've inspired me to try to find a spot or two in the ocean now!
jkm1667 Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Another great sesh stormy well done. Only new to blackies do they go all year or mainly through the winter months ? mcgoo
stormy Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 Yeah, pretty well find fish all year. Some months are tough to find fish in my area, but they are biting 30klm up the coast or in the harbour and vice versa.
