Mullet live, butterflied or slabbed off the beach?

Hey there raiders.

Would just like some opinions on using mullet off the beach and your preferred style. i am chasing jews, tailor, salmon and or any sharks that want a nibble. I have an alvey set up and am based on the northern beaches

I usually either run them live with a single hook through the back on a running sinker rig, or snelled double hook for either butterfly or slab.

I havent had much success with mullet as of yet but would really like to catch something using them. Not sure why i want to catch a big fish using mullet but, i do!!

I feel that berley is pretty important with them live as they dont seem to have much scent,

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

G'day Dave,

One of the best ways I've ever seen of rigging a whole fish was in a fishing mag article by Geoff Wilson. He called it the "Punchy Barnard" method. You cut the nose off level with the eyes, then you fillet one side from the tail to the head, leaving the fillet still attached. The fillet is then folded back over the head and secured with a hook on the other side, with another hook in near the tail wrist or, if using only one hook, tied with whatever ie cable tie, bait elastic or half hitch or two with trace line.

I haven't used this method yet but will when the fishing hots up..damn cold Victoria!!

Not really your best option off the beach. They spin in the current, don't look natural and cause line twist issues. I assume your mullet are either small <15cm if so, they can only be used live, as the law states. Or big >30cms, Slab the big fellas

Yeah took me a little bit to understand the mullet sizings, they are a bit ambiguous on first reading. Used to throw some smaller models about 10cm out live but never had any luck so now i have gone on the premise of "go big or go home" as i want a BIG jew.

I am curious as to the reason for the sizings if you knew? is it to do with breading size or something similar?

thanks
