EGK24A Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Hi Everyone, My name is Michael and I am new to this forum. Although there is a lot of tips on how to catch fish and useful information on targeting fish, I am having some problems with location. I really only fish off the land with my brother, nephew and sometimes the father in law. Rock fishing is a bit dangerous for the young one so we avoid it when the little one comes fishing. I am planning a full night out this Saturday and I am stumped for places to fish. I understand that not everyone likes to disclose their fishing locations and I can respect that but if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be really good. My brother is chasing after Jewfish, the rest of the crew and I are chasing anything that bites! haha! I have been fishing the Georges River, near chippo and also been out to port hacking/botany without much luck. Nothing of legal size that is so everything had to go back into the water Any suggestions on location or area where land based fishing (preferably on wharfs would be very helpful and appreciated.) Thanks, Michael
Reesn Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 G day mate. If your keen to drive to the nothern beaches.Middle harbour would be my first choice. I have been having a lot of luck with the Jewie at night there. There is a nice pontoon down of sangardo st seaforth. Safe for kids and easy to catch live bait. Good Luck
LungFai Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 You can also check out this post. http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=58795 It has info on certain known areas so you can pick and choose the location based on target fish, locality, or how safe/accessible it is. Regards Trung
EGK24A Posted December 12, 2012 Author Posted December 12, 2012 The Orange Peel - Middle Harbour sounds nice. Been reading a lot of good things coming out from there. I checked Sangardo St on google maps but it looks like you may need to park on the road and hike through the patch of trees? The end of the street looks like housing or warehousing :S Trung - Thanks for the link! That's is definitely helpful and hopefully we can find some good spots to continue going to! If anyone else has any suggestions of areas it would be appreciated. This weekend we are going to head down south towards Wollongong / Port Kembla and try out luck down there.
LungFai Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 If you are heading South down there then i'd advise steering clear of Wollongong Harbour itself. The place does not have many spots to fish and there are not that many fish to catch. The basin needs a re-work to get the fish back in but atm the place is mainly for Families and Surfers. Port Kembla is a good spot to fish, various types of fish and numerous fishing locales. You have Hill 60 with a good rock fishing platform, Fisherman's Beach for beach fishing and the Harbour for Breakwall/Jetty fishing. Or you can head 10 mins further south to Windang for estuary/lake fishing. Lake Illawarra has numerous places to fish from but the main action is usually around Windang. I think Cheekifisher is heading to the Caravan park side of Windang this Saturday and was looking for peeps to fish with.
EGK24A Posted December 13, 2012 Author Posted December 13, 2012 Thanks for the advice of staying away from Wollongong. Maybe I will head down to Windang and give that a go. Have heard a few good things about it so it might be worth the drive to check it out. Also thanks for the locations at Port Kembla, I will be sure to check them out prior to heading out.My brother and his kid are joining me this weekend so I probably won't do any rock fishing. I will try get in contact with cheekifisher and maybe we can fish together. Windang is beach fishing right?
pomey_git Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Is it Gunnamatta park? Down by Cronulla station? Thats a lovely little spot, especially for the kids. There is a swimming area with shark nets to. Lots of bream and pinkies around there. I'd guess a few whiting to, but im not very good at catching them. Plenty of Yakkas as well if you guys want to try for some big stuff. I hope that helps.
EGK24A Posted December 13, 2012 Author Posted December 13, 2012 I have been down to Gunamatta Bay (Not sure if that's the correct spelling....) Anyhow, only managed to land a few small bream there nothing huge. Everything thrown back Like fishing on the wharfs, safe for the kids and a solid ground to put a chair on to sit all night while I wait for the big one haha! I particularly like fishing off the wharfs as it's convenient and usually has parking close by. The only problem is that there are usually a billion and one people there fishing too. I was only at Greenwich a few weeks ago and there was about 35 rods there and 6 people fishing. Now that didnt seem right... Packed up and left after that.
pomey_git Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 yeah, I know what you mean. I used to live just up the road from the warf at Greenwhich and it was really convienent, but man it was popular. I didnt think the fishing was that great either. And the way people just leave there crap everywhere as well. ARGH! Any way, i wont go on. There is a ferry warf at watsons bay that might be worth a try. I was flicking for flatties when the salmon rolled in and destroyed my gear and my soul. Has anyone fished there? It might be woth a go one evening.
LungFai Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Windang is beach fishing right? Windang is : Estuary/Lake/Breakwall/Rocks/Bridge/Mini-breakwall/Pier/Wharf/Wading/Island fishing. Target Species : Tailor/Whiting/Bream/Tarwhine/Flathead/Jewfish/Garfish/Blackfish/Prawns and Blueswimmer Crabs. A bunch of others which i won't mention as they don't rate as a table fish e.g. Mullets...big big Mullets. As for which part of the Lake is the most successful.....I'll leave that to your exploration

I don't know how people can leave trash all over the place and just walk away from it. Disgusts me as well! Just google mapped the wharf at Watson bay and it looks like a nice place to fish. My brother and I will join you one evening if you're up for it in about 4 weeks? This Saturday will be my last fishing trip for the year. Windang is : Estuary/Lake/Breakwall/Rocks/Bridge/Mini-breakwall/Pier/Wharf/Wading/Island fishing. Hoping to catch any fish to be honest. Althought it would be good to land a Jewfish Have only ever caught brim and flathead. Looking forward to trying out my new Shimano Graphite Rod! Hehe! Looks like I will be doing a lot of exploring this weekend. Hopefully find a good spot that I can settle on straight away. Thanks heaps for the advice! Really appreciated mate.
