Rotating gear box oil

Hi Raiders

A quick one, how often should I rotate the gearbox oil in my 15hp outboard?

Every 12 months.

Might seem like over kill but for a 15 minute job its well worth it.

Should be serviced yearly as chrisg has said,not a difficult job.

100 engine hours or yearly what ever comes first and you wont go wrong,if old oil is milky time for some new seals as well cheers dunc333

when u replace the oil also replace the nylon seals

Remove the bottom screw , if the oil is a light brown / golden colour then OK , it should last another 12 months or so.

If it is black then it's just old & needs to be replaced.

If milkey , then water is getting in. This maybe from the seales around the prop shaft or as simple as replacing the "O" rings around the top & bottom screws

If you decide to replace , remove the top screw & bottom screw & drain the oil.

To replace , the oil needs to be filled from the bottom up, not the top down.

If the gear box requires 500ml of oil , purchase 2 X 500ml as squeezing the complete 500 ml from one bottle is near impossible

Geoff i found a neat little trick use 6mm clear hose it fits perfectly into the drain bolt hole than hold the other end of the hose above the gearbox connect the bottles funnel lid with the hose and squeeze away u get to use the whole bottle
