GreyNurse Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 Is it just me being pedantic, or do other readers of this and other forums, also notice that more and more posts are being written without punctuation? No full stops, commas, capital letters, apostrophes or question marks. Did this punctuation-less form of communication have it's origin in our school system or has it just crept into modern English, like leet or texting? Do others find it more difficult to define sentences, or am I just being a crusty old curmudgeon? Nursie
Jewhunter Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I believe that you are spot on. Internet & social media marketers are leading the way in changing the so called status pro for texting & internet communication. For instance, how was that to read? Or it is this. Internet & social media marketers' are leading the way in changing the so called 'status pro' for texting & internet communications. Shorter, sharper sentences & paragraphs are much easier to read & more user freindly than the long winded versions. This will probably change within 6 months! Cheers, Grant.
Yowie Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 Some of the people dontreallygiveaf*ckaboutanything when it comes to writing or texting. Probably because so much time is spent on electronic gadgets for texting/tweeting and whatever else one does with these gadgets, much electronic conversation is abbreviated, and if a mistake is made, then too bad, the recipient should be able to work out the meaning of the conversation. Just laziness by some people. Some younger people have lost the art of conversation. Would like to see them transported back 30 years in time, when there were no mobile phones, i-pods or other gadgets, when to talk to someone meant calling the landline telephone, or actually visiting someone at their home, rather than sitting down with a latte in one hand and the mobile in the other hand and looking like everybody else trying to text/talk/drink coffee all at the same time.
abecedarian Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I can't stand it when people can't be bothered to punctuate their sentences. There are some other fishing forums where punctuation and an honest attempt at correct spelling are a prerequisite for membership. They have a notice on the front page. Perhaps Fishraider could adopt a similar policy and improve the quality and readability of the posts?
big Neil Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 Or maybe we should allow for the fact that this is a fishing forum. Whilst some of the older members may prefer to read well punctuated posts, we should also acknowledge that Australia is a vast congregation of multiculturalism. Let us enjoy reading the fishing exploits of our members. After all, many of our newspapers are poorly written (by supposedly well educated journalists). I do take the point, but don't think it's overly important in this particular forum. Neil.
Day's Fishin Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I put it down to mobile phones etc. I receive messages from my sons and on most occasions, I have to ring them and ask what in hell they wrote! It annoys the hell out of me. Regards Jeff.
Catchin Jack Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 Blame the mobile phones and sms messages, you wouldn't type a proper message sending an sms and it has crept into everything else making it much easier and quicker for the user, a type of "short hand" maybe?

I prefer to be able to fish and at least make a report. Leaving a few commas and full stops and hyphens out shouldn't be frowned upon. IMHO (in my honest opinion)

SMS or short message text is not a new phenomonon. It is now coming into play because of the devices and access to be able to share information. "Other" fishing forums that have that sort of demand in their Terms of Use may need it because of the type of members they are attracting. We do not seem to have an issue with our fishraider members. Most know that this forum is heavily moderated and that we keep it a place where people feel comfortable to post. No arguments, no discrimination and members even comment on being able to let their young children peruse fishraider. One needs to be very careful not to discriminate against people with lower stands of education, English as a second language etc Not all of us are able to express ourselves as well as others! For what it is worth I think that the quality and content of our members' posts is fantastic. We have a huge repository of information here that helps everyone enjoy their fishing. We will see more and more of this. The onus is now on our educators and leaders that enforce industry standards to not accept it!
